III. Vocabulary List:

Batter boards are lumber nailed horizontally to the stake to serve as the
horizontal plane where the building technical measurements are established.
Normally, batter boards are installed horizontally to an elevation parallel with
the ground floor line.
Plastic water level hose is a transparent plastic tube having a diameter of
1/4 to 1/2" filled with water used to establish horizontal lines. This is a simple

but accurate instrument conveniently used in establishing horizontal plane.

Pegs/Stakes are wooden sticks used as posts sharpened at one end and
driven into the ground to serve as boundaries or horizontal batter boards.
String or Cord is any medium of material such as steel wire, cotton, plastic
or nylon cord used for connecting established points or lines in the batter
board.
Grade stake is a mark stake for the batter board.

building lines?

2. What do you call the mark stake for the batter board?

Laying out and Staking of Batter Boards
2.2 Measure, lay-out and set batter boards according to
specification.

In building construction, layout and staking is the process of establishing

the points of building outlines or perimeters on the ground or site where the
building is to be constructed.

It also includes demolition, clearing, staking, batter boards and

establishing the exact location of the building post and walls that will rest on
the ground. Others define layout and staking as the process of transferring the
measurement of foundation plan to the ground or site of construction.

The batter boards should be set as high as the desired height of the
foundation. In establishing building lines with different heights of foundation,
the tallest foundation is set as the height of the batter boards.

TIPS & GUIDES FOR ESTABLISHING BUILDING LINES

TIPS #: 01

Make sure that you know where the

building lines and boundaries are.

TIPS #: 02
Check your materials, tools and
equipment before starting the building
setting out work.
TIPS #: 03

[10]
G11 CARPENTRY NCII - MODULE 01

Always USE measurements given on

the plan and avoid scaling.

TIPS #: 04
Set out a reference/base line (e.g.
front of a house). Make sure that you do
not encroach on or over the building line
or on other property.
TIPS #:
05
Be aware of underground embedded
utilities. e.g. TAWAD water pipes.

TIPS #: 06

Check the drawings for errors.

TIPS #: 07

Take all measurements with care

and accuracy.

TIPS #: 08

Check and double check

VI. Practice Task 2.2: LAY-OUT & STAKING

2.2 Measure, lay-out and set batter boards according to specification.

Description of the Activity

This activity entails the laying out and staking of building lines based on
the concept learned on both Lesson 2.1 & Lesson 2.2. The learners will develop
their critical thinking, communication, problem-solving and job skills.

G11 CARPENTRY NCII - MODULE 01

Desired Learning Outcomes

LO 2. Stake out and set batter boards

2.1 Set out stakes from pre-determined building lines
2.2 Measure, lay-out and cut batter board according to specification
2.3 Set stakes at 0.75 – 1.00 meter away from the pre-determined
building lines
2.4 Secure batter boards with tolerance for dimensions at +/- 5mm,
and levelness of +/- 3mm.
2.5 Use PPE according to job requirements
USE construction forms from LO: #1

✓ set of plans, ✓ bolo ✓ nylon string

✓ tape measure preferably 30M ✓ plumb bob ✓ 2” nails
✓ level hose 20M ✓ claw hammer ✓ 3” nails
✓ carpenter’s level ✓ handsaw ✓ 2x2 coco lumber
✓ sledge hammer ✓ leather gloves ✓ pencil
✓ carpenter square ✓ safety glasses ✓ spray paint

Task Procedure(s): LAY-OUT & STAKING

First, determine the building set back from the road line. If site conditions
permit, install the stake on the ground at reasonable spacing from the line of
excavation otherwise, the leveling and reference point established on the
batter board might be disturbed when the stakes are affected by the
excavation.
After establishing the initial reference line of the building which is normally
parallel with the road, other points perpendicular to this line follows after
fixing the intersections or corners at 90o. This is accomplished with the aid of
a plywood or framing square. In the absence of triangular squares, the 3-4-5
triangle rule should be applied. Never use a small square to stablish a 90o
corner.

Testing Tools for Fixing Building Lines

3.1 Square building lines with end tolerance of +/- 3mm

Good carpentry work demands accuracy in measurement. This could be

done only with the aid of various testing tools that will give precise readings and
produce accurate measurements
For quality work, it is important to know the various types of testing tools and
the know-how to use them properly. Remember, using the right tools properly
in the job can prolong their useable life.

It is most important that dwelling structure has

square (90o) corners.

Therefore, the setting out of building lines is so

crucial in attaining vertical and horizontal
alignments in order to avoid construction problems
later. . . e.g. roofs not fitting, misalign door and
window jambs.

III. Vocabulary List:

Accuracy is the degree to which the result of a measurement conforms to the
correct value or standard.
Plastic water level hose is a transparent plastic tube having a diameter of
1/4 to 1/2" filled with water used to establish horizontal lines. This is a simple

but accurate instrument conveniently used in establishing horizontal plane.

String or cord is any medium of material such as steel wire, cotton, plastic
or nylon cord used for connecting established points or lines in the batter
board.
Kerf is a slit made by cutting with a saw.

3.2 Measure and set building lines

LAYING OUT BUILDING LINES: Building lines pertain to lines representing

the side of the building passing through the center of the foundation posts. The
final laying-out is done on the batter board. Before the builder can start the
layout, he has to decide which among the building lines he is going to use.

Procedure in Laying out the Foundation Lines:

1. Transfer the orientation line to the top

of the batter boards. This is done by
hanging a plumb bob to the orientation
line, and by marking the corresponding
point on the batter board.

2. Locate the center of the foundation

from the orientation line at the
opposite batter boards. Then mark
these two points with nails or a saw
kerf.

3. Stretch string No. 1 on these two

marks. Anchor it to the batter boards.

during the process of squaring lines.

on line 1, starting from the original
corner, and tie another cord to mark this
corner B.

6. Stretch line No. 2 square or perpendicular to line 1, passing through the cord
