1st Semester- Fall 2014-2015 Assignment [3] Due: October 22- 2014

Problem (1) Replace the force and couple-moment system by an equivalent force and specify its
coordinate points of application (x,0) on the x-axis, and (0,y) on the y-axis.

Problem (2) Determine the moment of each of the three forces about point B of the beam.

Problem (3) If the man at B exerts a force of P = 50 lb on the rope, determine the magnitude of the force
F the man at C must exert to prevent the pole from tipping, (M@A =0).
Problem (4) The ends of the triangular plate are subjected to three couples. Determine the magnitude of
the force F so that the resultant couple moment is 400 N.m clockwise.

Problem (5) Replace the force and couple system acting on the frame by an equivalent resultant force and
specify where the resultant's line of action intersects: (a) member AB, measured from B, (b)
member BC, measured from C.

Problem (6) The chord passing over the two small pulleys A and B of the square board is subjected to a
tension of 100 N. Determine the required tension P acting on the chord that passes over pulleys
C and D so that the resultant couple produced by the two couples is 25 N.m acting clockwise.
