EST – European Society for Translation Studies

Features
EST, the European Society for Translation Studies, is an international society of translation and
interpreting scholars. Its activities are devoted to Translation Studies, the name now given in
English to academic reflection and research around translation and language interpreting.

EST was founded in Vienna, Austria in September 1992 as a:

– network for stimulating and coordinating research into translation and interpreting

– forum for the exchange and dissemination of new ideas and insights in Translation Studies

– centre for information and know-how on issues of quality and training in translation and
interpreting

EST flyer – EST poster – EST Constitution EST Membership is open to individual scholars and
academic and other institutions in Europe and beyond. EST has over 300 registered members
from more than 40 countries around the world. Its activities are coordinated by an Executive
Board which is elected every three years at the tri-annual Congress by the General Assembly.

EST publishes the EST Newsletter twice a year. It cooperates with universities and other bodies,
in particular in the production of the Translation Studies Bibliography, has established links with
other translators and translation scholars bodies (Agreements) and with other organizations,
including publishers and universities.

EST has set up a summer school scholarship program, a Young Scholar Award, an EST
Translation Studies Literature Grant, a TS Event Grant, and is supporting and/or sponsoring
various research and research training activities.

Benefits
Members have the right to participate in meetings, conferences or other events organized by the
Society against payment of a reduced attendance fee; they receive copies of the EST Newsletter,
which will be published at regular intervals, and updated membership lists. The right to vote and
hold office shall be confined to full and honorary members.

Committees
The Society works through a system of boards and committees, each charged with a specific
task: the Executive Board, the Advisory Board, the Young Scholar Prize Committee, the Event
Grant Committee, the Book Purchase Grant Committee, the Doctoral Studies Committee, the
Translation Committee, the Glossary Committee, and the International Doctorate in Translation
Studies (ID-TS) Committee.

In 2011 the Society also set up the Translation Committee to commission translations of
Translation Studies research. The Glossary Committee was established following the
Germersheim congress in 2013 in order to produce a glossary of Translation Studies terms and
has helped instigate the WikiProject in Translation Studies.

Awards
The Society gives several annual awards: for young scholars to attend summer schools in
Translation Studies, for academic departments to purchase Translation Studies publications, for
the organization of Translation Studies events, and for the translation of research on translation.
Every three years it also gives a prize to the best young scholar in Translation Studies.
