Activity: Jump starting a piece of equipment

Principal Steps Potential Safety Hazards Recommended Controls

Open up the battery compartments on both
vehicles to expose the batteries.
Hook up the positive jumper cable first
Hook up the ground jumper to the frame or engine
block so you are not next to the battery when
you jump the vehicle
After the vehicle is started disconnect the ground
cable first, then the positive lead
Pinch fingers, etc.
Short out the battery with jewelry and burn
yourself
Battery could explode causing acid burns and
debris in eye’s
Machine could roll once it is started and injure
person disconnecting cables
Take the time to know where your pinch points are.
Make sure you remove all jewelry before working in
anything with electricity weather it’s AC or DC
current.
Wear proper PPE to protect yourself from burns and
flying debris.
Make sure that the operator has you in his eye sight at
all times
