The overall Sulfur content of crude oil coming into the refineries has been increasing since 1985. Sulfur
analysis in crude oil is very important because it causes difficulties, such as corrosion of metals, in processing
the oil and because of air pollution from the burning of fuels processed from crude oils having high Sulfur
content. Sulfur compounds can also poison catalysts causing downtime and loss of revenue. In order to
process higher Sulfur crude oils, equipment must be built from more expensive alloys to provide higher
corrosion resistance.
The past decade new emission regulations (air quality improvement programs) have passed to decrease the
amount of Sulfur in finished products. In a huge number of countries the Sulfur content in Gasoline & Diesel
has been reduced to a level of less than 10 ppm. Due to these new Sulfur regulations, there have been
several techniques that have appeared on the market to measure individual Sulfur compounds and total
Sulfur at trace level in fuels.
There is a need for Nitrogen testing in refineries as some Nitrogen compounds can form salts that can cause
heat exchanger fouling, blocking filters within the refinery process. Nitrogen compounds can also
temporarily deactivate catalysts used in fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) units. Production may have to run at
lower rates (less profit) if the FCC unit is offline. Wastewater may contain high levels of Nitrogen. Excessive
release to the environment can lead to build up of nutrients, affecting the water quality.
The ElemeNtS analyzer combines the testing of Sulfur and Nitrogen for monitoring and protecting key
processes in the refining industry, examples of processes are listed below:
▪ Corrosion protection
→ Protect refinery parts and electronics against corrosive effects of Sulfur
▪ Catalyst protection
→ Sulfur and Nitrogen may act as a catalyst poison in the refinery industry
▪ Environmental protection
→ Protect people, animals, plant and aquatic life from the harmful effects of Sulfur & Nitrogen
in the environment
The ElemeNtS detects these substances through a uniquely efficient process that includes Ultra Violet
Fluorescence (UVF) and Chemiluminescence (CLD). The ElemeNtS includes numerous benefits, including:
Nitrogen and Sulfur calibration standards are analyzed to produce calibration curves. When samples of
unknown Nitrogen and/or Sulfur content are analyzed, the ElemeNtS software compares the raw sample
data to the calibration curve to generate and report Nitrogen and/or Sulfur concentrations.
SO2 in the combustion gases is exposed to ultraviolet radiation of a specific wavelength as shown in Equation
(2) and excited to a higher energy state. Decay to ground state emit radiation in the form of Sulfur
fluorescence. This fluorescence is detected by a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and is proportional to the
amount of Sulfur in the original sample.
In Equation (3), the NO is reacted with O3 (ozone), produced by an onboard ozone generator, to form NO 2*
(excited Nitrogen dioxide). As the metastable species decays, a photon of light is emitted at specific
wavelengths and detected by a photomultiplier tube (PMT). This chemiluminescent emission is specific for
Nitrogen and is proportional to the amount of Nitrogen in the original sample. Only chemically bound
Nitrogen is detected — atmospheric, diatomic Nitrogen (N2) is not.
Note: The ozone generator and scrubber are only used in combination with the Nitrogen detector option.

The Single Shot Autosampler (SSA) for ElemeNtS provides a cost-effective solution for injecting a
single replicate sample by syringe. The SSA uses a dual motor design to facilitate automatic needle
insertion through the septum which guarantees optimum repeatability. The SSA is fully
programmable and receives power and automatic control through the ElemeNtS.

Nitrogen Interference kit for ElemeNtS
38.00.550
The analysis of total Sulfur in ULSD samples by oxidative combustion followed by UVF detection can
be hindered by interference from certain Nitrogen components. This effect is caused by a cross-
sensitivity to NO, which fluoresces in the same wavelength range as SO2. Depending on the Nitrogen
content of the sample, this can lead to false positive Sulfur results up to 1,7 mg/kg at 160 mg/kg
Nitrogen.
To increase the cetane index of diesel fuels, alkyl nitrates, more commonly 2-Ethylhexyl Nitrate
(2-EHN), is added to the diesel. The relative high Nitrogen concentration might cause a serious
positive bias in the Sulfur determination.
By means of an optimized Sulfur detector the ElemeNtS can efficiently reduce the interference of
these type of compounds without the need of software correction or added ozone supply.
The Nitrogen Interference kit is available as a separate option (23800.550) or build in and factory
tested in the ElemeNtS (38.00.550).
Note: System having the Nitrogen Interference kit will have an LOD of 60 ppbW for Sulfur.

Filters, gas scrubbers, and dryers are available from PAC and are
recommended in all cases:
Each supply gas cylinder requires a regulator to reduce the cylinder pressure
to the desired working pressure. PAC can supply the recommended regulators.
Care should be taken to ensure use of the proper regulator for each gas in use.
