1. PLEASE EXPLAIN THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE BUTTERFLY.

In the spring of the year a butterfly lays eggs. That egg then goes
through four metamorphosis or changes. First is the egg. Secondly, the
egg grows into a caterpillar (larva). In this stage the caterpillar eats
and eats a lot of food. They eat so much that their skin gets tight.
Transitioning into the third phase they malt (shed) their skin until
they are nice and tight into a pupa (chrysalis). The final and fourth
stage an adult butterfly emerges. The adult butterfly lays eggs and the
process repeats itself all over again. The complete cycle can take
anywhere from 5-21 days.

2a. PLEASE EXPLAIN IN DETAIL AN ACTIVITY OR LESSON THAT WILL BE

APPROPRIATE FOR THREE-FOUR YEAR OLDS ON THE BUTTERFLY LIFE
CYCLE.

I would read the book to the children From Caterpillar to Butterfly by

Deborah Helligman. First, I will introduce the book and the parts of
the book as well as a picture walk just to grab their attention on what
will come in the book. I will ask the children questions about what
they think the book is about. I will ask the children question while
reading the book. After reading the book I will ask the children open-
ended questions about the book. We will review the story line and
then move into the activity, The Pretty Butterfly poem. I will have the
poem on a big note pad with lots of colors and pictures of the
caterpillar and the different four phases it will go through. I will have
puppets/prop made from felt to correspond with the poem.

3. DESIGN A LESSON PLAN BASED ON PLANTS.

Lesson Plan on Flowers

Activity Name: Pretty Flowers

Age of Child(ren): Preschool
Setting: Small Group
Developmental Focus: Cognitive and Fine Motor
Key Content Focus: Earth and Environmental Science
Key Content Area Concepts: Manipulating/ Reconstructing
Key Content Area Skills: The children will use and decorate parts of a flower to
build their own flower.
Learning Outcomes:
ELS: GOAL HPD-5: Children develop small muscle control and hand-eye
coordination to manipulate objects and work with tools

Materials to Collect/Prepare
• Paint
• Potatoes
• Parts of the Flower
• Glue
• Aprons
• Paper to construct the complete flower on
• The Pretty Flower by Eric Carle
Transition/Warm-Up/Introduction:
We will read the book title listed above. After we have read the book, we will
review some things covered in the book.

Adult-Guided Procedures:
• Read the book aloud to the children
• Ask the children questions about the book
• Introduce the parts of the flower that they will use to make their own
flower
• Set up the paint for the children to use
• Cut the potatoes up so the children can use them to paint with
• Make sure there are enough good quality aprons for the children

Child-Guided Procedures:
• Attentively listen to the book being read
• Ask questions about the book
• Answer questions about the book that the teacher asks
• Manipulate, reconstruct and decorate their own flower
• Ask for assistance when needed
Conversation to Support Learning/Talking with Children:
• Do you have a favorite flower/plant if you do what is the name of it?
• What is your favorite color flower/plant?
• What other things do you know that grow like flowers/plants?
Observations and Assessment:
Children will listen to the book as it is being read. They will then ask and answer
questions about the book. Children will experiment with the different toys. The
children will also decorate the parts of the flower with the paint and use the
potato as the paint brush. The children will build and create their own flowers
and use the glue to construct them. The teacher will assist the children, only
when asked to do so.

Accommodations for Individuals:

Scaffolding Down:
Color the parts of the flower and assist the child in putting together the
flower
Scaffolding Up:
Have the children cut out the parts of the flower themselves instead of the
teacher.

WATER, ETC.
