THE ORIGINS OF WORLD WAR II

GOAL

TO TEACH STUDENTS HOW DICTATORS ROSE TO POWER IN EUROPE AND HOW THEIR ACTIONS FUELED THE
SECOND WORLD WAR.

III. LESSON OBJECTIVES - OBJECTIVES MUST BE WRITTEN USING OBSERVABLE VERBS

TSWBAT- Summarize why Dictators were able to rise to power in Europe in the wake of
the Treaty of Versailles.

TSWBAT- Describe what methods Dictators used to rise to power in their respective
nations.
TSWBAT- Evaluate the impact that these dictators had on their respective nations.

V. A. INTRODUCTION

THE TEACHER WILL INTRODUCE THE LESSON BY DISCUSSING SOME THINGS FROM THE PRE-
LESSON ASSESSMENT WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN COMPLETED BEFORE THE LESSON IS TAUGHT.
THE TEACHER WILL THEN SHOW THE STUDENTS THE OBJECTIVES FOR THE LESSON ON THE
SECOND SLIDE OF THE POWERPOINT PRESENTATION.

B. LESSON DEVELOPMENT (ACTIVITIES, PROCEDURES)

PROCEDURES

THE STUDENTS WILL TAKE THEIR OWN NOTES AS THE POWERPOINT IS PRESENTED IN THE WAY
THAT WORKS BEST FOR THEM.

FIRST, DICTATORS CAME


THE TEACHER WILL DISPLAY THE NEXT SLIDE WHICH DESCRIBES HOW
TO POWER FOLLOWING THE END OF WORLD WAR I. THE TEACHER WILL ALSO DESCRIBE HOW
THESE DICTATORS WERE ABLE TO GARNISH THE SUPPORT THAT THEY DID.

SECOND, THE TEACHER WILL DISPLAY THE SLIDE THE DESCRIBES MUSSOLINI’S RISE TO POWER.
THE TEACHER WILL THEN MOVE TO THE NEXT SLIDE WITH MORE INFORMATION ON MUSSOLINI.
AFTER ADVANCING TO EACH SLIDE AND TEACHING THE INFORMATION ON THEM, THE TEACHER
WILL DISCUSS MUSSOLINI IN MORE DETAIL.

THIRD, THE TEACHER WILL ADVANCE TO THE NEXT SLIDE AND DISCUSS JOSEPH STALIN. THE
TEACHER WILL THEN DISCUSS STALIN IN MORE DETAIL THAN IS PRESENTED ON THE SLIDE. THE
TEACHER WILL THEN ADVANCE TO THE NEXT SLIDE AND DO THE SAME.

FOURTH, THE TEACHER WILL MOVE TO THE NEXT SET OF SLIDES ON HITLER. THE TEACHER WILL
THEN DESCRIBE HITLER IN MORE DETAIL THAN WHAT IS PRESENT ON THE SLIDES. THE TEACHER
WILL THEN SHOW STUDENTS A CLIP FROM THE WORLD WARS DOCUMENTARY ABOUT HITLER.
FIFTH, THE TEACHER WILL THEN ADVANCE TO THE NEXT SLIDE ONFRANCISCO FRANCO AND
PROCEED TO EMBELLISH ON THE INFORMATION PRESENT ON THE SLIDE. THE TEACHER WILL
THEN BRIEFLY DESCRIBE THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR ON THE NEXT SLIDE. ON THE FOLLOWING
SLIDE, THE TEACHER WILL THEN ASK THE STUDENTS IF THEY HAVE HEARD OF PICASSO’S
“GUERNICA”. THEN, THE TEACHER WILL PROCEED TO SHOW THE STUDENTS A PICTURE OF THE
PAINTING “GUERNICA” AND ASK THEM TO TRY AND FIGURE OUT WHAT IT MEANS.

SIXTH, THE TEACHER WILL THEN DISPLAY THE NEXT SLIDE DETAILING HOWNAZI GERMANY
EXPANDED ITS BORDERS IN THE YEARS LEADING UP TO THE WAR. THE TEACHER WILL THEN GO
INTO MORE DETAIL ABOUT THIS EXPANSION.

SEVENTH, THE TEACHER WILL THEN DISPLAY THE SLIDE THAT DISCUSSES THE INVASIONS OF
BOTH POLAND AND FRANCE. THE TEACHER WILL THEN GO INTO MORE DETAIL ABOUT THIS
TOPIC.

EIGHTH, THE TEACHER WILL THEN DISPLAY THE SLIDES THAT DISCUSSES EARLY BATTLES OF THE
WAR AND THE CONTINUED WAR EFFORT OF GREAT BRITAIN AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF IT. THE
TEACHER WILL THEN ADD DETAIL TO THESE.

C. EVIDENCE OF DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION (CONTENT, PROCESS, PRODUCTS, OR LEARNING

CONTENT

THERE WILL BE PICTURES AND VIDEOS PLACED THROUGHOUT THE PRESENTATION IN ORDER TO
HELP STUDENTS WHO ARE VISUAL RATHER THAN AUDITORY LEARNERS LEARN THE MATERIAL.

D. CLOSURE (SUMMARY)

THE LESSON WILL BE CLOSED WITH A SUMMARY OF THE MATERIAL THAT WAS JUST TAUGHT.

VI. ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION

STUDENTS WILL BE ASSESSED BY ASKING IF THEY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR NEED ANYTHING CLARIFIED AFTER
THE LESSON HAS BEEN COMPLETED. THERE WILL A STUDENT NOTEBOOK CHECK ONCE A WEEK EVERY
FRIDAY.

VII. MODIFICATIONS AND/OR ACCOMMODATIONS


STUDENTS IN NEED WILL BE CUED AS DIRECTED BY THEIR 504 PLAN WHEN NEEDED.
