Activity Name: Family Feast Age of Child(ren): Preschool

Setting: Large Group
Developmental Focus: Cognitive and Fine Motor
Key Content Focus: Math
Key Content Area Concepts: Counting/ Number Sequencing
Key Content Area Skills: Story Comprehension/Story Retelling and Counting
Learning Outcomes:
ELS: GOAL MTE-1: Children demonstrate a beginning understanding of
numbers and quantity during play and other activities.
ELS: GOAL LDC-10: Children comprehend and use information presented
in books and other print media.
Materials to Collect/Prepare:

• Feast for Ten by Cathryn Falwell

• Plastic Food Toys

• Numbers Necklace1-10

Transition/Warm-Up/Introduction:
Read Feast for Ten by Cathryn Falwell to the children in a large group. After
reading the book I will then ask the class about their experiences in the grocery
store. I will also ask the children what is the most they have eaten dinner with (.
i.e. party of 10, 12, 15).
Adult-Guided Procedures:
• Read the book
• Assemble the number necklaces
• Assign each child with a number necklace
• Assist children when gathering the objects that correspond with their
necklace
• Help the children when lining up for the number line.
Child-Guided Procedures:
The child will gather ingredients/food items from the kitchen/home center just
like in the book. If the classroom has a grocery store center this will work best.
Each child will be assigned a specific number necklace with a number of the
sequence 1-10. The child will then match the food items with the number that
they were given. After each child has matched their items and their number
necklace, they will create a number line. The children will line up 1-10 and then
retell the story.
Conversation to Support Learning/Talking with Children:
What is your favorite thing to get from the grocery store?
Who usually does the grocery shopping at your house?
Do you like to go to the grocery store and go shopping?
What is the most people that have ever been at your house for dinner?
Has your parent ever brought 10 of an item?
Observations and Assessment:
Accommodations for Individuals:
Scaffolding Down:
To scaffold down for the children, I would assemble the number line
myself, as well have the food objects grouped together already for the
children.
Scaffolding Up:
To scaffold up for the children I would have pictures of the book cut out
and have the children sequence them on their own.
Next Steps:

within their own families, homes, classrooms, and communities
o Talk about close family members, name their relationships to each
other, and describe family routines. CD-6h
• GOAL CD-9: Children explore concepts connected with their daily
