MLA formatting is a set requirement for writing essays and research papers that is often
used in courses that are considered a form of the arts. In MLA, there are specific requirements
that are to be used. The font should be either Times New Roman or Calibri and the font size
needs to be set to 12 and the page needs to be set to 1” margins. Each page should have a header
with last name and page number to the right top corner. A heading that includes the student’s
name, class instructor, class name, and date needs formatted to the left side of the paper, double-
spaced. Title should be centered on the document. Paragraphs need to be indented from the left,
using the tab key, the indent tool under paragraph, or 5 presses of the space bar. Be sure to set
the rest of the essay to double-space under paragraph settings in tool bar.
The last page of the essay or research paper should include a “Works Cited” page to give
credit to authors of information that was quoted, paraphrased or summarized in the essay or
research paper. Works Cited page should have Works Cited should be at the top and centered.
Do not underline or italicize Work Cited. References need to be in alphabetically order and same
font and size as paper. Double space all works being cited but don’t add extra spaces between
entries. I believe that is all I can remember about using MLA formatting. I have had to use APA
the last couple of semesters and it is a little different. Thanks for showing me the show/hide tool

Lesson Plan
September 06,2019
Instructor: Susan Robinson
Grade Level: First Grade
Lesson Title: What do plants need to grow
Time Needed: Preparation 2 hours
Observation time: 2 weeks
Standard:
LS1-2. Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics
LS1-2-1. Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and
water to grow.
Objectives:
Students will observe that sunlight is needed to warm the soil around a seed in order for it
to sprout.
Students will observe that water is used to keep soil moist for plants to germinate but also
to help provide nutrients from the soil during the growth process.
Materials :
Computer
Video: Bill Nye the Science Guy: Plants
Plastic cups
Soil
Seeds
Paper, pencils, and crayons
2. Use board to draw parts of a plant and help students identify what a plant looks like as it
grow from a seed.
3. Help students to understand what a hypothesis is and how they can use one to determine
how the sun and water will help their seeds grow.
.
Activity (Prep 1 hr./ 2 weeks for observation): Students will be given a plastic cup with soil
and one seed. Students will place seed into soil and then water their seeds. Students will draw a
picture of what their cup and seed look like at the beginning of the experiment and will draw a
picture everyday to log what their plants look like as the germination process happens. They will
record when and how much water their seeds receive, will also record the amount of time the
seeds are in the sunlight, and estimate how big their plants might get.
Check for Understanding: Students will be able to use their collected data to explain how their
seeds reacted with exposure to sunlight and water. They will be able to also use their drawings to
describe the growth process from once their plants sprout. Students will also have an opportunity
to discuss if their experiment/observations matched their hypothesis.
