About The LEC
● Established in 1967, the LEC is a private non-profit program for adults with
intellectual disabilities living around Baldwin county.
● Mission: To support and maximize the quality of life for adult with I.D.D.
● Purpose: Provide adults with I.D.D the opportunity to engage in meaningful life
experiences.
● Vision: to have the community embrace individuals with developmental
disabilities for their similarities not their differences.
● Services: Promotes safety and wellness, personal approaches for desired goals, and
a focus on quality of life.
Internship Roles
● Mentor for the clients at the LEC.
● Educate the clients on improving their lifestyle and health
● Ensure that the clients are following COVID-19 protocols throughout the day
● Supervise the clients while they are participating in multiple activities throughout
the day.
● Running different programs such as: Art kits, Music, Brain games, Workouts,
Yoga, Zumba, Dance Aerobics, Sit and Be Fit, Bucket Drumming, etc.
● Administrative duties (Anna)
● Create mini projects such as: corn hole boards, an outdoor checkerboard, benches,
tables, raised flower beds, and some other items.
● Hosted and volunteered in weekend events like: MLK day, the potato drop, and
the Black and White Gallery.
COVID-19 Procedures
● Daily temperature checks in morning and lunch
● Custodians cleaning and disinfecting the center all day
● Making sure they wash their hands before and after programs
● Wiping down exercise equipment and machines after being used
● Making sure they wear their masks over their nose and mouth
● Practice socially distance
● Avoid sharing food, drinks, and contact
● Make sure they cough and sneeze into their elbow
Overall Mission and Objectives
● Health promotion for their overall health
● Health promoting their physical, nutritional, mental, and emotional health
● Impact their lives in the most positive way possible
● Making a difference in how they live their everyday lives
● Educate them on COVID-19 and ways to overcome the pandemic
Physical Health Objective
● Promote their physical health in every aspect
● Getting them more active and having the mindset to workout on their own
● Demonstrate exercise equipment for them to use
● Increase their strength, endurance, mobility, and stability
Physical Health
● Work on full body exercises, build endurance, strength, mobility, and stability
● More exercise inside and outside of LEC
● Morning Workouts with the guys and girls
- Morning walks, exercise machines, group exercises, personal training

● Recreational Therapy at Lockerly (Mondays)
- Ladder ball, corn hole, croquet, kick ball, dodgeball,
parachutes

● Sit and Be Fit, Dance Aerobics, Zumba, Yoga
● Outdoor activities: musical chairs with hula hoops, corn hole, ladder ball, croquet,
football, hula hoops
Effects of COVID-19 and Physical Health
● Reduced physical activity
● Limited equipment
● Smaller groups
● Less motivation and drive
● Fear of exposure (Anxiety)
Ways in Improving Physical Health during pandemic
● Smaller group workouts (music and motivation)
● Individual workouts (practicum)
● Going outside (outdoor games)
● Sit and Be Fit, Dance Aerobics, Zumba, Yoga
● Walks outside
● Field trips to outdoor areas (Sunset fields, Lockerly, Huelly Park, Walter B.
Williams, etc.)
● Preparing for concert (sign language and music playing)
Nutritional Health Objectives
● Educate the clients about simple and effective ways to incorporate healthier alternatives into their lifestyle
● Encourage clients to try new foods that they usually wouldn't see themselves trying
● Identify the nutritional properties of fruits and vegetables and the benefits to the body.
● Demonstrate new recipes that will help them expand their knowledge about the nutritional properties of foods
● Allow the clients the focus on ways they can improve their own diet
Nutritional Health
● Eat Your Heart Out is a nutritional course on Wednesdays that highlighted the
importance of eating healthy and making lifestyle changes that will improve the
clients health.
● Each week a new recipe was taught, and the clients would learn about the
nutritional benefits of the foods, how to cook it, and then they would try it.
Mental and Emotional Health Objectives
● To educate clients on the importance of
taking care of their mental health and
taking time for themselves.
● To provide a variety of activities that
encourage an improved mental health
● To give clients a safe space to talk about
anything they may need or want to talk
about
● To show that mental health is not
one-size-fits-all and that what may relax
and destress one client, might not help
another.

Yoga
● Yoga is a course meant to help
improve mental health that is run on
Friday’s through zoom so everyone
could participate
● The clients focused on taking time
for themselves and work on deep
breathing exercises, practice major
yoga poses, and participate in yoga
workouts
● Gives clients a chance to improve
their mental, emotional, and physical
health
Social Hour and Wrap-Up
● Social hour and the wrap-up are
recreational times throughout the day
aimed at giving the clients a chance
to communicate with each other and
talk about how they feel or anything
else they want
● Clients talk about their day, things
they may be looking forward to, their
favorite things to do, and so much
more
Brain Games
● Consists of: wheel of fortune, jeopardy, pictionary, spot the difference, close-up
objects quizzes, kahoots, 10 strikes, movie and music guessing games, etc
● Expand their knowledge and mental state
● Improve critical thinking skills
● Encourage them when responses are correct
● Guide them if their response is incorrect
● Providing ways to relieve stress and mental instability
Therapeutic Bucket Drumming
● Drumming with small group (5-6 clients)
● Work on memorization, Repetition, counting, tempo, and rhythm
● Gives them a chance to improve their mental and emotional state by listening to
and playing music

● Partnered with the GIVE Center to honor Martin Luther King Jr. by participating
in volunteer opportunities.
● Consist of building benches, tables, and corn hole boards

community by bagging and passing out potatoes to
those in need.
● Consisted of bagging 20,000 potatoes and
dispersing them to feed over 70,000 individuals

● Hosted by the LEC giving them the opportunity to develop and learn the art of photography
● The Gallery was sponsored by Autism Awareness
● Consisted of a gallery of photographs taken by some of the clients that were then sold in an
effort to raise money for them
Goals After
● Impact their lives in ways they will remember
● Make sure they can do things on their own
● Give them the opportunity to make an impact on others
● Create a safer and happier environment at LEC
● Improvement in their overall health
● Overcome the pandemic: wash hands, wear mask, social distance, reduce the cases,
etc.
● Leave with a smile on their faces
