Shifting the focus on high-rise buildings, this webinar reiterated some fundamental aspects of

high-rises. As the name suggests, this building is judged based on its height. Distinct types of high-rise
buildings are identified as institutional buildings, residential, mixed-used developments, and
commercial and retail developments. With having an occupied floor 75 feet above the lowest level as
one of its main characteristics, laying out an electrical system design calls for more extensive
precautionary and safety measures. Along with this, factors to be considered in creating such a
complex design include building automation, encompassing the ventilation, shutters, elevators and
lifts, lighting, and etc. Basically, a high-rise building electrical system is made up of hundreds of
components, designed and assembled into a safe, functional power-delivery system.
Further into the webinar, we were taught the fundamentals in an engineering method called
splicing or when two or more wires are joined together. This method requires a specialist and only
engineers with special skill training are allowed to perform the procedure. It is an intricate method
thus, the imposition that only those with proper knowledge can carry it out. Since splicing specialists
are uncommon, other countries consider it as a job that is entitled to high compensation. In
connection to this, we were also taught the basic steps in performing said method. Preparing the wire
surface comes in first. Then, with a connector, the two conductors should be joined together. Next
step is insulating the wire using an ethylene propylene rubber tape. Fourth, in order to make sure that
the wires are properly insulated, we put shielding to the wires. Lastly, using a combination of the
rubber splicing tape overlaid with a vinyl tape, rejacketing is then carried out. The process may look
and sound basic but without the required knowledge and skill, one misstep could lead to a series of
setbacks. That’s also why extensive precautions are indispensable.
