Material :

Understanding decimals.
A decimal number always has a decimal point.

Example : 15.34 is a decimal number ( if Cambridge, use point (.) for symbol of decimal), but in
Indonesia, we use (,) comma.

It has two decimal places because there are two numbers after the decimal point.

We can write the number 15.34 in a place- value table, like this. The position of a digit in the
table show its value .

Hundreds Tens Units . Tenths Hundredth Thousandths

s
- 1 5 . 3 4 -

The digit 3 represents 3 tenths.

The digit 1 represents 1 ten.
The digit 4 represents 4
The digit 5 represents 5 units. hundreths.

Together they make 15, Together they make 34

which is the whole –number part hundreths, which is the
of the decimal number fractional part of the decimal
number
Multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000.
When we multiply a whole number or a decimal by 10, the number becomes ten time bigger.
This means that all the digits in the number move on placve in the left in the place-value table.

For example :

24 × 10 =

Hundreds Tens Units . Tenths Hundredths An empty space before the

2 4 . decimal point must be filled with
2 4 0 a zero.

So the answer 24 × 10 is 240

0.24 × 10 =
An empty space at the end of the
Hundreds Tens Units . Tenths Hundredths number, after the decimal point,
0 . 2 4 does not need to be filled with a
2 4 zero.

So the answer from 0.24 × 10 is 2.4

When we multiply by 100, all the digits ,move two places to the left.

When we multiply by 1000, all the digits ,move three places to the left.
Similary, when you devide a whole number or a decimal number by 10 all the digits in the
number move on place to the right in the place-value table.

24 ÷ 10 =

An empty space before the first Tens Units . Tenths Hundredths

digit does not need to be filled 2 4 .
with a zero. 2 . 4

So the answer 24 ÷ 10 is 2.4

0.24 ÷ 10 =

An empty space before the Units . Tenths Hundredths Thousandths

decimal point should be filled 0 . 2 4
with a zero. 0 . 0 2 4

So the answer 0.24 ÷ 10 is 0.024
