Understanding decimals.
A decimal number always has a decimal point.
Example : 15.34 is a decimal number ( if Cambridge, use point (.) for symbol of decimal), but in
Indonesia, we use (,) comma.
It has two decimal places because there are two numbers after the decimal point.
We can write the number 15.34 in a place- value table, like this. The position of a digit in the
table show its value .
For example :
24 × 10 =
0.24 × 10 =
An empty space at the end of the
Hundreds Tens Units . Tenths Hundredths number, after the decimal point,
0 . 2 4 does not need to be filled with a
2 4 zero.
When we multiply by 100, all the digits ,move two places to the left.
When we multiply by 1000, all the digits ,move three places to the left.
Similary, when you devide a whole number or a decimal number by 10 all the digits in the
number move on place to the right in the place-value table.
24 ÷ 10 =
0.24 ÷ 10 =
