Task List

Week 6 lessons highlight two important topics in Algebra – Equations and

Functions. Lesson 6 tackles applications of equations particularly the linear and
quadratic equations. Lesson 7 considers mathematical modelling using the concept
of functions.

Keep track of your progress in this lesson by checking the number corresponding to
each task.

Lesson 6. EQUATIONS

Highlights

A. What is an equation?

- is a mathematical statement that consists of an equal symbol between two

functions, two quadratic equations, two linear equations of any variables. But not
between the two different constant values.

B. Explain the difference between a linear and a quadratic equation in terms of

degree and solution.
• A linear equation is one such that its degree is one and it has one root. 2x+1=0
is a linear equation and x=-1/2 is the solution.
• A quadratic equation is one, whose degree is two and it contains two roots.
𝑥 2 -5x+6=0 is a quadratic equation and 2,3 are the roots.

C. Give a concise definition of the following:

1. Rate: is defined as a specific ratio that contains two terms of different units. It is usually
written in fraction form. If the number in the denominator is 1, then we have what we call the
“Unit Rate”.
Ex. speed=distance/time or m/sec
180 𝑑𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑠 15 𝑑𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑠
The rate of 12 𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑡ℎ is equal to 1 𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑡ℎ , 15 dollars per month.

2. Ratio: A ratio is nothing but a statement that compares two numbers.

Ex. 3:5

3. Proportion: Is an equation that states the equality of two rates or ratios.

Ex. a: b=c: d
a/b=c/d
ad=bc.

Lesson 7. Applications of Functions

Highlights

A. Give the definition of linear and quadratic function in terms of formula and
geometric meaning.
- A linear function is a function that results to a graph of a straight line. It has dependent
variable (y) and independent variable (x) which do not contain any power more than one.
The general form of a linear function is Ax + By + C=0 where A, and c which they are
constant. It can be form into this, y=f(x)= a+ bx. While in quadratic, is a function that
contain just one of the variables but is raised to the second power. Quadratic functions
when plotted, produce a parabola. For the formula, y = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐.

B. Define exponential function and give its practical significance.

- It is a function formed when an independent variable “u” is expressed as the
exponent. It has a form of f(u)= 𝑎𝑢 . Where a is the base and letter u is the
exponent. This significant is that it can be used to describe a decay or growth.
1
Ex. An exponential function, f(u) = (2)𝑢 is an example of a decaying exponential,
since this reduces as the value of u increases.

C. Define logarithmic function and give its practical significance.

- It is the inverse of the exponential function. It can be expressed in a
logarithmic form, f(u) = y = log 6 𝑢. Which can be expressed in an exponential
form which is u = 𝑏 𝑢 , where b remains the base. Logarithmic functions are
useful in that they help to work with large numbers, which are ordinarily
are difficult to handle.
