Retrieval understanding how to successfully search commercial information
databases. The course outlines how such databases are structured and how
to interrogate the associated search interfaces so as to improve result output.
This is completed in a broad framework of accessing user needs as related
to electronic information products; cost and effectiveness of electronic
database searching; techniques for client interviewing concerning
information product requirements; professional and management issues,
product evaluation and review.
2874 2835 ISYS2069 Desktop This course introduces students to desktop and electronic publishing,
Publishing graphics and presentation skills in business. Students should understand
generic features and functions of DTP, electronic publishing, graphics and
presentation software. Furthermore, they should be able to appreciate what
is being used by the business sector, where and why. Students should also
develop knowledge and skills in publication design. Such issues as layout,
typography, and graphics (including photographs) will be explored during
the semester. This subject will also extend knowledge about the import and
export of disparate file types within the context of publications.

Business skills of the Internet and electronic conunerce, and how it is affecting the
world of business - locally and internationally. Students will be introduced
in some depth to the role and tools of the World Wide Web. Content
includes: the role of ecommerce as a global market, its design and structure,
its implementation and architecture. Issues such as security, privacy.
2405 2353 ISYSI035 Knowledge This course focuses on the nature and management of knowledge and intellectual
Management capital in the business environment.

Knowledge is used by the people of the organisation but embedded in many


aspects of the organisation. In our every day work we use the knowledge which is
available around us to improve our performance. This useful knowledge may
found in the people of the organisation, the organisational infrastructure (including
technological infrastructure, formal processes, physical layout, tools and
information resources) and the knowledge embedded in relationships (with
suppliers, customers, governments and other outside influences).

2393 2337 ISYS2081 Global Network This course aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore the
impact that global communication technology has on business and social
change. Issues associated with both the wired Internet as well as the
wireless (mobile) network are explored. Electronic and mobile business
development is a key focus to the course. However be aware that a wide
range of issues or applications will be explored, so the course is a bit of a
'scatter' approach to how wired and wireless technology is being used.
2335 LIBR1025 Recreational This course is offered as an elective in the Undergraduate, Graduate and
Literature for Masters level Programs in the School.
Young People
Through study in this course, students will explore the range of literature
available to young people, including picture story material, fiction, poetry
and information texts as well as electronic and web based material. The
course aims to develop a critical capacity in students by allowing them to
examine their own critical judgments within the study of the literary critical
framework. Students will examine a number of genres, styles and issues that
are important in the area. Wide reading in the literature for young people is
encouraged and the assignment work will be partially based on this wide
reading. This course will examine critical responses to the literature for
young people, particularly in the area of fiction and picture storybook
materials. An examination of the publishing and marketing of material for
young people will also be offered. A number of guest speakers and events
are offered to the students during the semester.
3607 LIBR1019 Information This course will enable students to develop their understanding of the
Organisation in organisation of information resources in libraries through their description
Libraries and subject analysis. Students will begin to practice skills in resource
description and subject analysis and explore broad approaches to
information organisation.
