Elements Specific To A One-Act play Contribute To The Development Of Its Theme .

the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner is capable and empowered
to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and skills at your own pace and time.

What I Need to Know

This module will guide the students to explain how the elements specific to a
one-act play contribute to the development of its theme. Knowing the elements of a
play is necessary specifically when reading or listening to the different types of
literature. Learners will be given activities wherein they will be analyzing the
elements of one-act play and they will be explaining how the elements specific to a
one-act play contributed to the development of its theme.

Module 5 will aid learners to develop their skills in analyzing the elements of
one-act play and in explaining how the elements specific to a one-act play
contributed to the development of its theme. Acquiring these skills are some of the
basic steps to have mastery on elements of one-act play. Learners would also apply
ideas from their experiences so that collaboration and learning will be easy.

connection to the literature and its author.

It is very important for us to be familiarized to the elements of a story. Some of


the common elements of a story that you have encountered already are necessary in
this lesson. Stories that you read follows the basic elements of story such as setting,
character, dialogue, conflict, plot and theme. One-act play is a type of drama or
stage play that is presented with one situation or episode in a single setup on stage.
Like some kinds of literature, one-act play is also composing of basic elements of
story and it contributes a lot to the development of the theme.

Knowing how elements of the one-act play contributes to the development of the
theme is vital to have a deeper appreciation and connection to the literature and its
author. One-act play is a type of drama or stage play that is presented with one
situation or episode in a single setup on stage. Setting, character, dialogue, conflict,
plot, and theme are basic elements of one-act play that contribute to the
development of its theme.

1. Setting –refers to when and where the story happened.


2. Character- refers to the person involved in the story.
3. Characterization- is a technique of the author/playwright to let the reader
describe the characters by analyzing how an actor or actress assigned to a
particular role delivers the lines from the script for a one-act play
4. Conflict- refers to the problems encountered by the main character/s. in one-
act play.
5. Dialogue – is presented like this: MRS. STEVENSON: (Irritated voice)
“Operator, I’ve been dialing Murray Hill 7-0093 now for the last three quarters
of an hour and the line is always busy.”
6. Theme –refers to the central idea or message to the readers or audiences
which is expressed in a statement and not just in one word.
7. Plot – It is divided into five structures and can be commonly found to all types
of literary works categorized as prose or poetry:
a. Exposition – where setting and characters are introduced
b. Rising Action – where the conflict or problems emerged
c. Climax – where the most exciting part or peak point of the story
appears like a cliffhanger to the readers if the character is about to
resolve the conflict encountered in the story
d. Falling Action – where the effect of the climax appears before reaching
the ending of the story
e. Denouement /dəno͞oˈmän/ or Resolution – where the final scene
appears and leaves the readers memorable happy or sad ending.
