    King Dewanampiyatissa, previously known as Tissa, sent a delegation to Emperor Dharmashoka of India after coming to power in Sri Lanka. When the delegation returned, Emperor Dharmashoka sent what was needed for Tissa's anointing as king, including using the title "Devanapiya". Later, Arahath Mahinda, the son of Emperor Ashoka, brought many Buddhist monks to Sri Lanka during Dewanampiyatissa's reign. King Dewanampiyatissa built several monasteries, or pirivenas, for monk education and consecrated the area as Maha Viharaya.

    King Dewanampiyatissa

    King Dewanmpiyatissa's previous name was Tissa. At that time India was ruled by Emperor
    Dharmashoka. After king Tissa came to power , he sent a delegation to Emperor Dharmashoka.

    When the delegation return to Sri Lanka it belonged to king Tissa. Emperor Dharmashoka sent for Sri
    Lanka what was needed for the anointing. The Title Devanapiya was later used by king Ashoka, king Tissa
    also used.

    Arahath Mahinda, the son of king Ashoka brought a large number of leading monks to Sri Lanka during
    the reign of king Dewanampiyatissa.

    Thuparamaya was built by king Dewanampiyatissa. The king built several pirivenas for the learning of
    the monks and named the area Maha Viharaya and consecrated it.
