Sessional-1 □ Sessional-II □ Terminal Examination – SPRING 2021

Course Title: Chemical Process Principles Course Code: CHE113 Credit Hours: 3(3, 0)
Course Instructor/s: Dr. Faisal Ahmad Programme Name: BS Chemical Engineering
Semester: 2 Batch: FA20-CHE Section: A, B, R Date:
Time Allowed: 01 Hour Maximum Marks: 30
Important Instructions / Guidelines:
 Read the question paper carefully and answer the questions according to their statement. No book, internet or
any other form of external source(s) can be used to solve the problem. Copying from some other students’
examination sheets will be considered unfair means.
 You are required to keep the webcam on and focused on you all the time during online exam.

Question 1: (C2, CLO1, PLO1) (4+4+4)

Describe the following.
i) Law of conservation of mass
ii) Selectivity
iii) Extent of reaction

Question 2: (C3, CLO2, PLO1) (3+5+5+5)

Propane is dehydrogenated to form propylene in a catalytic reactor:

C3H8  C3H6 + H2

The process is to be designed for X% overall conversion of propane. The reaction products are separated into
two streams: the first, which contains H2, C3H6, and 0.555% of the propane that leaves the reactor, is taken off
as product; the second stream, which contains the balance of the unreacted propane and 5% of the propylene
in the first stream, is recycled to the reactor.

i) Sketch the process flow chart and label the unknown variables
ii) Calculate the composition of the product
iii) Calculate the recycle ratio (moles recycled)/(mole fresh feed)
iv) Calculate the single-pass conversion.

You are required to find the conversion by using the following formula:

X = 94 + (Roll number/100)

Note: Roll number is the numeric value in the student ID.

For example: For student ID: FA20-CHE-001, the roll number is 001.
X = 94 + (1/100) = 94.01

For student ID: FA19-CHE-011, the roll number is 011.

X = 94 + (11/100) = 94.11

For student ID: FA18-CHE-111, the roll number is 111.

X = 94 + (111/100) = 95.11
