ANSWER:
1. )
Previously we need to know that ethnocentrism is an assessment of other cultures
based on their own cultural values and standards. Ethnocentric people value other
groups relative to their own group or culture, especially when it comes to language,
behavior, customs, and religion.
One example that becomes a misinterpretation is "The behavior of 'Carok in
Madura". Carok is an assassination attempt by Madurese men when they feel their
pride has been disturbed by others. For the outsiders who see this phenomenon,
they might consider this behavior very brutal, but in fact for the Madurese, this
behavior is considered very sacred.
In my environment, this kind of behavior is commonplace and seems to be an
ingrained tradition. This behavior has been ingrained for a long time from the
ancestors of the Madurese people known as "Sakera". In this regard, the Madurese
have the motto "ètèmbhâng potè mata, angoan apotèa tolang" literally means 'than
the whites of the eyes are better to whitish bones' which is meant to indicate that
rather than feeling ashamed it is better to die.
2. )
Stereotypes are excessive generalizations of a person based on the characteristics
that exist in the group (race, ethnicity, or religion). Stereotypes are "short cuts" in
thinking.
Among the examples that have trended both on television and in the print media for
the past few years are “Arab terrorists”. Through various sources of information that
there was a bombing incident that occurred and was carried out by people with the
Islamic religion, and as a form of a rapid thought process, so that Muslims were
concluded to have originated and were in Arabia. Then came the stereotype that
Arabs were terrorists.
