4.3 Battery
The GSM/GPRS module requires installation of an additional rechargeable battery. The
battery must be installed in the bottom part of the MAG 8000 enclosure and connected as
shown below.
/
It is also required to place the battery holder in the right position as shown below. Notice that
the wide part must be below the SIM card to keep it in place (see the arrow in the figure
below).
/
4.4 Antenna
The antenna is designed for wall mounting or for mounting inside of concrete chambers with
a low attenuation of the signal strength.
/
NOTICE
The antenna must be placed where the optimal signal strength from the network is
available to obtain long battery lifetime and permanently working GSM/GPRS
communication. Avoid placing the antenna close to high-voltage units or high-power lines
and metal plates.
The antenna is rated IP68 and will not be affected by flooding. However, the transmission
cannot be guaranteed under flooding conditions.
Follow the instructions in this chapter closely to maintain the protection degree of the
flowmeter and ensure the correct operation of the module.
2. Mount the antenna into the cable gland, and connect antenna adapter cable.
3. Mount M20 to M16 reduction onto the MAG 8000, making sure the reduction is tightened
correctly to guarantee IP68 standard.
2. Push the cable gland over the open end of the analog inputs cable.
3. Slide the M12 connector parts onto the cable in the order shown below. Make sure the
shield is bent the shield to the jacket.
1. Screw together the M12 connector parts, making sure the parts are tightened correctly to
guarantee IP68 standard.
2. Screw the protection cover onto the M12 Female connector, making sure it is done
correctly to guarantee IP67 standard. The plastic loop must be around the cable.
2. Using for example a screw driver, push through the rubber to open the side.
3. Carefully push the antenna cable into the rubber part from the side and remove the tool
(e.g. screw driver).
4. Check that the two cables are inserted correctly into the rubber part.
7. Push rubber part into M20 cable gland, and adjust antenna cable and analog inputs cable
making sure that the shield of the analog inputs cable and the left side metal of the SMA
connector are below the cable clamp. After adjusting the cable, tighten the two screws of
the cable gland making sure that the cables are not squeezed and that they have
electrical connection on the metal.
8. Mount the M20 cable gland cover tightening it to torque 10 Nm to guarantee IP68
standard.
NOTICE
Shielding
At one end of each cable its shield must be connected to protective earth. If a connector is
used at this end, the shell of the connector must be connected to the shield of the cable.
/
2. Prepare coupling cable for physical analog inputs, see "Technical data" for pin
description.
WARNING
Overvoltage
Overvoltage on both analog inputs may damage the internal electronic components!
Analog input 1 (current input) shall not be connected directly to a power supply source.
Analog input 2 (ratiometric) shall not exceed 6V DC.
NOTICE
On the first power-up the LED on the GSM/GPRS module flashes during start-up. Then the
module will automatically start charging the battery.
6.2 Start-up
As part of the power-saving mode, the module is set to be awake for only three minutes. It is,
however, possible to manually wake up the module in order to ensure that the configuration
settings sent via SMS are received completely at the time required.
This is done by pressing the push button located in the top left corner of the module for five
seconds until the LED flashes (see figure below). The microprocessor will start up the
module, establish communication with the network, and ask for any pending commands
For details about the SMS configuration see "Configuration commands" (Page 33).
NOTICE
Module replacement
If the GSM/GPRS module is replaced, all configuration settings must be loaded again.
/
① Push button
② LED
6.4 Configuring
The architecture of the add-on module allows remote configuration using SMS sent to the
module via the mobile network from a mobile phone. These commands will be received
when the unit wakes up at next transmission time or every 24 hours.
As standard the GSM/GPRS module has a basic configuration, but the settings can be
modified to fit the application. SMS codes ensure a safe and easy configuration of the
module.
For initial configuration the SIM card PIN code must be set to 1000.
Note
Unknown commands sent to the GSM/GPRS module are ignored. Commands containing
invalid parameter values cause a configuration error that is recorded and an alarm SMS
which is sent to the alarm recipients.
For reference information on the SMS and GPRS communication, refer to your local mobile
provider or Mobile network code (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_network_code).
Note
P56=1M;
This configuration sets the transmission interval to one month but synchronizes the
transmission with the first measurement of each month. Monthly transmission allows a
measurement period of 31 minutes or longer.
This feature is especially useful for billing purposes.
Example:
Configuration;P55=15min; P56=24h;
Note
Correct format
Every command must end with ";" in order to be accepted by the module.
Parameters:
configuration1 to "n" – configuration parameter
Example:
Settings to define the SMTP server, authentication account, server password, user email
account, selection of the identifier, and GSM mode only active.
Configuration;P14=smtp.gmx.at;P15=test@gmx.at;
P16=test;P17=test@gmx.at;P51=0;P52=1;
Example:
Settings: The sample rate is 15 minutes; transmission once a day and measurement
synchronization at 6:00 a.m.
Configuration;P55=15min;P56=24h;P61=06:00;
Note
The standard syntax for the mobile numbers allows the use of " + ", "00" (e.g.
+2855511223344or 002855511223344).
Check the configuration of your local network provider for details on any particular syntax
used.
Transmission mode:
Network communication through GSM or GPRS is set up via parameter P52. The options
are as follows:
Option Description
0 If GPRS connection is available, the report will be delivered as email. If not, the report will
be delivered as SMS
1 SMS with only TOT1 values will be delivered. In case the network is not available, the
information will be stored until the next time the module is logged on to the GPRS network
2 The report will always be delivered as email
Example:
Configuration;P52=0;
Option = 0
An information email will be delivered via the GPRS network. In case the network fails, the
data will be delivered as SMS with the TOT 1 information to the phone number configured.
Option = 1
Only an SMS with the TOT 1 values will be delivered.
Option = 2
Only an information email using the predefined settings will be delivered.

Finally, the sample rate and the time for transmission must be defined.
1. Ensure that SIM card has PIN code 1000.
2. Ensure that network setting for SMS and GPRS are correct in order to secure
communication. This information is normally available on the mobile supplier's web page.
3. Set mobile numbers for the persons authorized to configure the module and to receive
alarms.
4. Check that the mobile numbers follow the correct local dialling format (i.e + or 00, country
code, area code, phone number, etc).
5. Change the PIN code.
6. Ensure that all command instructions end with ";" in order to be accepted by the module.
Example:
1. Check that SIM card PIN code is 1000.
2. Send configuration via SMS:
– SMS 1 (Service center, whitelist and alarm lists):
Configuration;P3=<PhoneNumberSMS_ServiceCenter>;P4=<PhoneNumberUser1>;P
7=<PhoneNumberAlarmRecipient1>;
– SMS 2 (GPRS and email account settings):
Configuration;P10=web.vodafone.de;P15=mag8000@gmx.de;P17=mag8000@gmx.d
e;P16=test123;P14=mail.gmx.net;P18=user.name@domain.com;
– SMS 3 (Set sample rate, transmission time and measurement synchronization):
Configuration;P55=5min;P56=24h;P61=06:00;
The module will answer "Configuration: OK" after receiving the correct settings.
3. Send a retrieve SMS command
– RetrieveConf;1000;<EmailAccount>
NOTICE
PIN code
It is recommended to change the SIM card PIN code after configuration to avoid
unauthorized access to the GSM module.
Note
The time for the next module wake-up is relative to the time when the configuration via
SMS was received by the module.
The parameter P61 will ensure the synchronization of the data collection at the time
required.
Network selection
The GSM/GPRS module will automatically recognize the country network predefined in the
SIM card so usually it is unnecessary to define the network provider.
If, however, the module is installed near a country border, it is highly recommended to use
the manual mode when selecting the network provider. This prevents the module from using
the foreign networks in case the signal from the local/domestic provider is weak avoiding
high roaming cost.
Command syntax:
Configuration;P2=<PLMN>;
Parameters:
<PLMN>: The PLMN network number
Note
Only if the selected network is not available, the GSM/GPRS module will automatically
switch to automatic network registration mode and choose the strongest network available.
The GSM/GPRS module sends out an SMS message to Recipient1 and Recipient2 to inform
that the registration of the specified network was not possible and a new network was
selected.
The SMS contains information on all available networks listed together with the following
status information:
● whether the used SIM card is allowed to register to that network
● the chosen network
● the network signal strength
SMS syntax:
[IDENTIFIER] [TIMESTAMP]
Cannot register to PLMN: [PLMN]
Available Networks:
[status], [available PLMN]
[status], [available PLMN]
SignalStrength: [signal strength]
Parameters:
<status>:
0 (unknown)
1 (PLMN available)
2 (PLMN currently registered to)
3 (not allowed to register to this PLMN)
Note
The retrieved PLMN network references can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_network_code
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_network_code)
Note
All information requested is sent the next time the module logs on to the network.
7.2.1 Configuration
Retrieve the complete configuration of the WCM via e-mail
Parameters:
PIN – SIM card PIN code
email-address – the receiver of the configuration
Example:
RetrieveConf;1000;name.surname@domain.com;
Note
Critical passwords are not included in the configuration email.
Configuration of the GSM/GPRS module can be sent via email only, even if the device is in
GSM mode only.
Note
Measurement history is sent by SMS if no email communication is possible, or if P52 is set to
1 (SMS only), see "Configuration commands" (Page 33).
Note
This function will send an alarm SMS to the alarm recipients registered and record the
mobile phone used for the modification.
In case of legal prosecution, the information can be tracked.
CAUTION
White list
The factory reset clears the white list and leaves the device unprotected.
Note
During factory reset the module will try to logon to the network using PIN code 1000. Set
the PIN code to 1000 prior to factory reset; otherwise the SIM card will be locked and the
PUK code must be entered to unlock the SIM card.
Note
The GSM/GPRS module email account must be created on a server that accepts non-secure
accounts using SMTP.
Note
If the transmission is every 30 days and the user tries to select 1 minute as sample rate, this
value is automatically reduced to 30 min to fit the maximum 1440 lines into one transmission
file.
Note
FLOWVALUE and TOT values are formatted by using an internal algorithm, which displays
at least three decimals.
ALARMS: The binary representation of this number indicates the corresponding alarm
setting.

Note
SMS syntax
The SMS commands are case sensitive. Ensure to use the correct syntax including capital
letters, spaces and characters.
The alarms are reported in two ways; via SMS and email.
Via SMS
The alarms are reported as the actual alarm numbers.
Syntax:
[IDENTIFIER] [TIMESTAMP]
[ALARM] [ALARM/WARNING INDEX] [ALARM/WARNING INDEX]
Example:
UNIT01 2009-09-20 09:20
ALARM 01 02 03 04
Note
The alarm/warning index is based on two digit numbers.
Via email
The alarms are reported in an attached csv file in column "Alarms", see "Attached csv file"
(Page 47).
1. Read the decimal value from the csv file.
2. Convert this value into a binary value.
3. Read off the position number of "1". The position number equals the alarm number.
Example:
Decimal value: 96
Binary value: 1 1 0 0 0 0 0
Position number: 7 6 5 4 3 2 1
This example shows that alarm numbers 06 and 07 are reported.

Installation
Install the OPC server application by executing "setup.exe" or by opening
"MAG 8000 OPC Server.msi" and follow the instructions.
When the software is installed, run the application by selecting
Start → Siemens MAG 8000 OPC Server → Open
Once the application has been run, a shortcut is placed in the startup list. The application
starts automatically on logon in order to receive data from the MAG 8000 devices.
Overview
The server needs its own email account. The properties (email address, user name,
password, server name, SSL) have to be configured in the application. These properties are
provided by the email provider.
Note
POP3 server
For some email providers it is necessary to activate POP3 access before the POP3 protocol
can be used. Corporate firewalls might block POP3 traffic. If there are problems connecting
to the email server try another internet connection.
Email Settings
To configure the email account open the Settings dialog and enter the following data:
● Email Address
The email address assigned to the MAG 8000 OPC Server.
● User Name
The user name of the email account assigned to the OPC Server. The user name is
normally the same as the email address.
● Password
The password of the email account assigned to the OPC Server.
● Server Name
The server name for incoming mails (POP3 protocol) of the email account assigned to the
OPC Server. The server name usually starts with pop.
– Checkbox "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)"
Set this option if the email account requires a secure connection.
– Checkbox "Leave a copy of the emails on the server"
Emails that are handled (entered into the database) are deleted from the server the
next time the application connects to the server.
In some rare cases (such as testing) it can be useful to leave the emails on the server.
In all other cases it is not recommended to leave the emails on the server because
that decreases performance.
● Timezone
The timezone setting is an offset to UTC (Universal Time, Coordinated). The OPC server
always reports timestamp as UTC+00:00.
NOTICE
Correct setting of the MAG 8000 internal clocks
The internal clocks of all MAG 8000 devices must be set to the same timezone, i.e.
ignore daylight saving time and possible location in different timezones.
If devices are located in different timezones, it is highly recommended to set all clocks to
UTC.
Note
The clocks can be set via the infrared port (IrDA) only and not via SMS. See SITRANS F
M MAG 8000 & MAG 8000 CT Operating intructions for further details.
● Interval
The interval between two email synchronizations. It is recommended to set the interval to 30
minutes. In rare cases a longer or shorter interval would be appropriate.
● Checkbox "Use a separate database for each device":
Using separate databases for each device can increase the performance.
● Checkbox "Store received files also in filesystem":
If this option is checked, the application stores the received csv files from the devices in
the filesystem.
– See the help file on the SW for details.
● Directory
This is the directory where the received csv files are stored if the checkbox "Store
received files also in filesystem" is activated.
● Name
The name of the device is used to assign incoming data to the correct device.
● Email Address
Stating the email address of a device is optional but strongly recommended.
– If the email address is stated, only emails with this sender address are accepted.
– If the email address of a device is not stated, everybody can send data to the OPC
server from any email address.
Note
The configuration shown might be outdated because it is updated only when the device is
explicitly instructed to send its configuration to the OPC server.
Delete button
Any device can be deleted from the list of devices by clicking the "Delete" button.
Until the application is terminated, a device can be recovered by selecting "Undo" from the
"Edit" menu in case it was deleted accidently.
As long as the device sends data to the OPC server, it will appear in the information bar at
the top of the window, and the device can be added to the list again
10.6 Help
From this menu you can get a short description of the various server topics.
The application is running until it is terminated by the user. To terminate the application right-
click on the icon and select "Exit".
Note
Log files are automatically deleted after one year.

Decontamination declaration
(http://pia.khe.siemens.com/efiles/feldg/files/Service/declaration_of_decontamination_en.
pdf)
With this declaration you certify that the returned products/spare parts have been
carefully cleaned and are free from any residues.
If the device has been operated together with toxic, caustic, flammable or water-
damaging products, clean the device before return by rinsing or neutralizing. Ensure that
all cavities are free from dangerous substances. Then, double-check the device to ensure
the cleaning is completed.
We will not service a device or spare part unless the declaration of decontamination
confirms proper decontamination of the device or spare part. Shipments without a
declaration of decontamination will be cleaned professionally at your expense before
further proceeding.
You can find the forms on the Internet and on the CD delivered with the device.
Note
Return of products with Lithium batteries
Lithium batteries are certified as dangerous goods according to the Regulation of Dangerous
Goods, UN 3090 and UN 3091. Special transport documentation is required to observe
these regulations.
Therefore it is recommended to remove lithium batteries prior to shipment
If the battery is important for the examination of the product and it cannot be removed, the
product has to be returned according to the Regulation of Dangerous goods.
