Assignment 2

What are the two options for identifying students with learning disabilities? Briefly
summarize each one.

The first option for identifying students with learning disabilities is IQ-Achievement
Discrepancy Model. This model uses sets of standardized test, administered by certified
diagnostician or school psychologist, that are designed to look at where a student’s IQ should be
in comparison to what their results show. If there are differences to where a student should be an
is that is used in help to determine if there is a disability.

The other option is to use the Response to Intervention Report. This approach doesn’t use a set of
test (although some testing can be used), a teacher will watch the student over a long period of
time and collect data on the students performance over this time. This approach looks at a lot of a
students work and takes into account the teacher’s observations of how a student is doing.

List at least four benefits of using an RTI approach with struggling students.

One of benefits of using RTI is that by using it takes away the option that a student is struggling
because of bad instruction.

Another benefit is that less students will be struggling before they receive official help. The
lessons the amount of time a student will have difficulties.

A third reason is according to the text from

https://iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu/module/rti01/cresource/q1/p03/#content, “The progress
monitoring data aid in placement decisions and may be used to inform and evaluate the
instructional process.”

Lastly, according to the text, “Students who are struggling academically receive immediate
support and intervention.” This is extremely important because the sooner students receive help
the better off they will be.

Compton is a first-grade student at Rosa Parks Elementary School. His teacher, having
administered a universal screening measure, has identified Compton as a struggling
reader. Name and explain the first step in the RTI approach that she should consider when
trying to help Compton. Keep in mind that Rosa Parks uses the standard protocol
approach.

Under the RTI standard protocol approach the beginning steps to help Compton would be using
Tier 1. This could be with a class or school wide intervention where all students are receiving
instructional techniques that have been proven to work from empirical data. The students will be
monitored all the time to see how their academic skills are progressing. If they are not meeting
benchmark standard, those students will become eligible for Tier 2 intervention.

Assume that your recommendation for Question 3 was implemented; however, Compton’s
progress continues to be insufficient. Name and explain the next step in the RTI approach.

Next step would be for Compton to be referred to Tier 2. According to

https://iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu/module/rti01/cresource/q2/p05/#content “Tier 2: Targeted
Interventions (Secondary Prevention). The standard protocol provides all students receiving Tier
2 with the same, empirically validated intervention. This intervention is often provided in a
small-group setting for a set period (anywhere between 10–20 weeks), with frequent progress
monitoring. Students within the small groups may possess heterogeneous or homogeneous skills.
Typically, the validated standard protocol includes instruction in several sets of skills so that
each child’s needs can be met, even with heterogeneous grouping. For example, a small group
might include one student who has problems with reading fluency, another who has poor
phonemic awareness, and another who has difficulties with phonics skills. The intervention the
group members receive is the same, with time devoted to each skill area (e.g., phonemic
awareness, phonics, vocabulary, reading fluency, and comprehension).”
