NORMAL, IL (October 1, 2020) - The Special Olympics is holding a golf event on October 5th at

the Chicago Highlands Club that will raise awareness for individuals with intellectual

disabilities. All year round the Special Olympics organization host sport events so that

individuals with intellectual disabilities can practice a sport they love in a comfortable and

supportive environment. The organization provides individuals with great coaches and great

officials that want to instill confidence, improve health, and spike competition. The goal of the

organization is to focus on what individuals can do, rather than what they CANNOT. Many

people who have volunteered love doing it because they realize what a great joy it brings to

individuals. “It is such a joy to see a smile on a kid’s face and to be the reason behind it.”

“There are as many as 200 million people with intellectual disabilities around the world. Our

goal is to reach out to every one of them—and their families as well. Special Olympics does this

through a wide range of trainings, competitions, health screenings and fund-raising events. We

also create opportunities for families, community members, local leaders, businesses, law

enforcement, celebrities, dignitaries and others to band together to change attitudes and support

athletes.” The Special Olympics cares about the lives of individuals and does whatever they can

to make not only an individual's day, but their life! The organization continues to grow and grow

because of individuals who volunteer their time and talents for the better of the community. It’s

not always easy to all come together in a community but it is a such a beautiful sight to see it

happen in events like these.

An intellectual disability is the most common developmental disability, and it occurs when a

person has certain limitations in cognitive areas such as communication, social, and self-care

skills. The organization has been changing the lives of many people since 1968 and it continues

to do so today. “The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and
athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual

disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate

courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their

families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.” For more information on how or
