Question Formation Guide

Yes/No Questions
1.

Question formation: Am/Is/Are + subject pronoun

Answer formation: Yes, + subject pronoun + am/is/are.


OR
No, + subject pronoun + am/is/are + not.

Examples: Q: Am I American? A: Yes, you are. / No, you’re not (you aren’t).
Q: Is he a teacher? A: Yes, he is. / No, he’s not (he isn’t).
Q: Are they married? A: Yes, they are. / No, they’re not (they aren’t).

Q: Who is your neighbor? A: Jessica is.
3. Any other verb

Question formation: Wh- word + do/does/did + subject pronoun + base form of main verb

Answer formation: Subject pronoun + main verb (appropriate tense) + information.

Examples: Q: How many children does she have? A: She has three children.
Q: When does the class start? A: It starts at 12:30pm.
Q: Why did you miss your train? A: We didn’t find a taxi.
