Unit 10: Conflict

CONDITIONALS
Conditional statements have two parts:
● Part 1: a condition / initial situation / cause / precedent. It is normally preceded by “IF”.
● Part 2: a result or outcome / effect / consequence / reaction (which depends on Part 1).

CONDITION 🡪 RESULT

Part 1 Part 2

Conditional 1 If you study really hard, you will get very high marks.
Conditional 2 If you studied really hard, you would get very high marks.

CONDITIONAL 1

The outcome is very likely to happen. Use it when situations are either real or possible. NOTE: After “if”, we use the
present tense (NOT will! ☠).

Examples:

● Affirmative sentence: If you speak English in class, the teacher will be super happy!
● Negative sentence: If you don’t do the homework, you won’t be prepared for your exams.
● Question: If guerillas stop killing people, will Colombia be a safe place?
● Inverted order: We will reduce the product price by 10 % if you place a large order.

AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES:

● I / have / money this weekend / we / travel to Guatapé If I have money , we will travel to Guatapé this weekend.

● Class / finish earlier today / I / go out with my friends If the class finishes, I will go out with my friends.

David / pass the English course / teacher / give him a present If David passes the English course, he will give him a present to the

teacher.

NEGATIVE SENTENCES:

● Airplane tickets / not be cheap / Cris / not travel to Italy If Airplane tickets are not cheap, Cris will not travel to Italy.

● You / drink coffee / late at night / you / not sleep well If you drink coffee late at night, you will not sleep well.

● Teacher / arrive late / students / not be happy If Teacher arrive late, students will not be happy.

QUESTIONS:

● He / want to study at UdeA / he / need a lot of money / ? If he wants to study at UdeA, will he need a lot of money?

● She / pop the question / you / say yes / ? If she pops the question, will you say yes?

● I / smoke / I / get cancer / ? If I smoke, will I get cancer?

INVERTED ORDER

● You / get downtown faster / take Circular Coonatra bus You will get down faster, if you take a Circular Coonatra bus.

● I / phone / you / there be a problem / mediation meeting I will phone you if, there is a problem in the mediation meeting.

● They / invite / you / you / go to the party? Will go to the party, If they invite you?

CONDITIONAL 2

The outcome is less likely or imaginary. Use it when situations are untrue, impossible, or hypothetical (contrary to fact, an
illusion). NOTE: After “if”, we use the past tense (NOT would! ☠)

Examples:

● Affirmative sentence: If I had a lot of money, I would purchase a Lamborghini, a helicopter, and a yacht.
● Negative sentence: If Juan Pablo didn’t have a lot of homework, he would go to a bar tonight to have a few beers.
● Question: If your best friend asked you to do something illegal, would you consider it?
● Inverted order: I would buy organic vegetables if I knew where to get them from.

AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES:

● I / win the lotto / I / travel around the world If I were won the lotto, I would travel around the world.

● We / see an accident in the street / we / help If We saw an accident in the street, We would helped.

● She / want to learn Italian / she / go to Multilingua If she were wanted to learned Italian, she would go to Multilingua.

NEGATIVE SENTENCES:

● Music / not exist / I / not be happy / If music were didn’t exist, I would not be happy.

● I / not have / so much homework / I / go to the cinema If I didn´t had so much homework, I would go to the cinema.

● He / not take the job / salary / be terrible If salary were be terrible, he would not take the job.

QUESTIONS:

● Streets / not be dangerous / more people / ride a bicycle / ? If streets were not be dangerous, would more people ride a bicycle?

● Someone / insult your mom / what / you / do / ? If someone insult your mom, what would you do?

● They / offer you money / you / kiss / a stranger / ? If they offer you money, would you kissed a stranger?

INVERTED ORDER

● My girlfriend / be angry / I / lie to her My girlfriend would be angry, if I were lied to her.

● I / be happy / pass / the English course I would be happy, If I were pass the English course.

● You / take drugs / your friends / give / them to you / ? Would you take drugs, If your friends give them to you?

ATTENTION! In Conditional 2, you say if I / she / he / it were:

● If Daniela were taller, she would play basketball professionally.


● If the iPhone 12 were cheap, I would definitely get one.
● If I weren’t a teacher, I would probably be a rock star!
● I would never work if I were a billionaire!
