POWER GENERATION BY HUMAN POWERED TREADMILL
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
A treadmill is a device generally used for walking or running while staying in the same place. Treadmills
were introduced before the development of powered machines, to harness the power of animals or humans
to do work, often a type of mill that was operated by a person or animal treading steps of a tread-wheel to
grind grain. More recently, treadmills are not used to harness power, but used as an exercise machines for
running or walking while staying in one place. Rather than the user powering the mill, the machine
provides a moving platform with a wide conveyor belt (track), driven by an electric motor. The belt moves
to the roller, requiring the user to walk or run at a speed matching that of the belt. The rate at which the
belt moves is the rate of walking or running. Thus, the speed of running may be controlled and measured.
The more expensive, heavy-duty versions are motor-driven (usually driven by an electric motor).
William Staub, a mechanical engineer, developed the first consumer treadmill for home use. Staub
developed his treadmill after reading the 1968 book, Aerobics by Kenneth H. Cooper. Cooper's book noted
that individuals who ran for eight minutes four to five times a week would be in better physical condition.
Staub noticed that there were no affordable household treadmills at the time and decided to develop one
for his own use during the late 1960s. He called his first treadmill the Pace Master 600. Once finished,
Staub sent his prototype treadmill to Cooper, who found the machine's first customers, including sellers of
fitness equipment.
Treadmills as power sources originated in antiquity. These ancient machines had three major types of
design. The first was a horizontal bar jutting out of a vertical shaft. It rotated around a vertical axis, driven
by an ox or other animal walking in a circle and pushing the bar. Humans were also used to power these.
The second design was a vertical wheel, a tread wheel, that was powered by climbing in place instead of
walking in circles. This is similar to what we know today as the hamster wheel. The third design also
required climbing but used a sloped, moving platform instead.
Treadmills as muscle powered engines originated roughly 4000 years ago. Their primary use was to lift
buckets of water. This same technology was later adapted to create rotary grain mills and the tread wheel
crane. It was also used to pump water and power dough-kneading machines and bellows.

POWER GENERATION BY HUMAN POWERED TREADMILL
The simpler, lighter, and less expensive versions passively resist the motion, moving only when walkers
push the belt with their feet hence, leg-powered. The latter types are known as manual treadmills. Here
this machine will explain about a manual (leg-powered) treadmill which can move only when walker push
the belt with his feet. But the addition is that there is a certain number of small DC generators, whose
moving parts are mechanically coupled or connected with the moving parts of the machine (rollers) which
moves when belt of the treadmill is moving. When the rotor (moving part) of the DC generator starts
moving or rotating it will produces emf across its output terminals. This generated emf can be used for
charging of Battery or other purposes.

LITERATURE SURVEY
Deepika .A.Gondane et.al [2] ,Treadmill based electricity generator for domestic
purpose.
The developed treadmill was based on a manual flatbed treadmill using an electromagnetic dynamo generator
coupled to a front axle flywheel. A heavy duty rechargeable battery pack was used to store the generated
energy and additional components to measure the generated power were included. The scope of this system
focuses upon a method of generating electrical energy from the application of specially designed treadmill
with the provision of specially designed washing machine, which will work when a human runs over a
treadmill for exercise. Here the treadmill generator used is not feasible, and maintenance cost is high.
Manish Debnath et.al [3], Starting of fluorescent tube light by using inverter circuit
instead of choke and starter arrangement.
A fluorescent tube light generally starts glowing when a large voltage is applied across its terminals at the
time of starting for a very short period, once its start glowing then it be able to continue with the normal
supply voltage. To conserve energy they have used inverter circuit instead of choke and starter arrangement.
The output voltage is not uniform creating problem in normal running of tube light or nearby connected
device.

CHAPTER 3
PROBLEM DEFINITION
The energy expended in a typical workout at the gym is usually wasted in the mechanics of the
equipment.
Although recent designs of energy harvesting exercise equipment have been introduced into the
market¸ These systems need to be improved and designed for maximum power output, Cost efficiency
and marketability.
Global warming, power shortage are one of the major drawbacks which can overcome using this
model.
OBJECTIVES
To design a cost-effective manual treadmill which produces power that can be used for various
purposes.
To provide a treadmill with Electricity Generator to reduce the pollution at some extent by saving
energy.
To add an adjustable inclined feature to increase the intensity of the work out.

POSSIBLE OUTCOMES
This manual tread mill with electricity generator is simple in design and is sustainable .
This treadmill with electricity generator is use full for such areas where electricity is not available.
Green house gases can be reduced upto some extent by this manual treadmill.
The resulting electrical energy can be stored in a battery and used for domestic purposes.
