Subject Area: Math Grade Level Kindergarten

Standards/ 2.3 K.A.1

Objectives Identify and describe two- and three- dimensional shapes.
2.3 K.A.2
Analyze, compare, create, and compose two- and three- dimensional shapes.
-Students will be able to identify the difference between a triangle and other shapes
by sorting out pictures in a chart
-Students will be able to compare and contrast different types of triangles by drawing
out a picture that includes equilateral and isosceles triangles.
1.2 K.E
Identify parts of a book (title, author) and parts of a text (beginning, details, and end)
-Students will be able to describe the beginning, middle, and end of the story Love
Triangle by Marci Colleen by placing the correct pictures into the chart
Motivation “Last time, we learned more about rectangles and squares. Can you tell me
(Introduction/ something you remember about either a rectangle or a square? Yes rectangles and
hook) squares both have 4 sides. But which shape has 4 sides that are all the same? A
square and which shape has 4 sides with 2 long and 2 short sides. Now that I have
refreshed your memory of rectangles and squares I want to talk about triangles today!
Body Unlike squares and rectangles, triangles only have 3 sides and 3 vertices or corners.
(Procedure/ When you think of a triangle, this is the type of triangle you see. (show them a
activities) picture of an equilateral triangle) This is a special triangle because all of its sides
look the same. It is called an equilateral triangle. If I show you two shapes, which
shape do you think is a triangle? (show a picture of an equilateral and an isosceles
triangle)There have been a lot of discussions on whether or not this is a triangle or if
this shape is a triangle. I want to show you a video from Sesame where two
monsters talk about how a triangle should look.
-Watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDqChRDPnZc
Looking back at the same two pictures and after watching the video, which shape do
you think is a triangle?
Both shapes are triangles because if I count the sides, they both have 3 sides and
when I count the vertices, they both have 3 vertices. Just as the video said, some
triangles look different from each other, but as long as you count the sides and the
corners and they add up to 3 then it’s a triangle.
As you know we can find shapes everywhere! Where do you think you might have
seen a triangle? (show some pictures of triangles in real life)
Using the information we learned about triangles, we are going to sort some pictures
into a chart. You are going to need a piece of paper and a crayon. Take your crayons
and draw a line straight down the middle of the paper. Then draw a line near the top
of the paper and go straight across. On one side of the chart will be for pictures of
triangles. Draw a triangle at the top. The other side of the chart will be for pictures
that are not triangles. We are going to write the word no and draw a picture of a
triangle to indicate these are not triangles. I am going to show you a picture and you
are going to tell me if it should go on the side with the triangles or the side with no
triangles. What is this a picture of? Looking at this picture, do you think it goes on
the side with the triangles or the side with no triangles? How do you know this is
a....? (continue this until there are no more pictures left)
(To differentiate for lower level students, use basic shapes not real life objects)
(To differentiate for higher level students, their will be a combination of real objects
and basic shapes)
-Great Job sorting the pictures friends! I want to share with you a book. The title of
the book is Love Triangle by Marcie Colleen. Looking at the cover of the book, what
shapes do you think are going to be in the book? I see a triangle, circle, and a square.
Does anyone have any ideas on what the story is going to be about? Let’s get into the
story!
Watch the Read Aloud “Love Triangle”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-aX0aLIMRg
-I enjoyed reading this story. Give me a thumbs up if you enjoyed the story. Give me
a thumbs down if you did not enjoy the story. There was a lot going on the story
between the three shapes. I thought we could practice beginning, middle, and end to
help us retell the story. Remember the beginning of the story is the first thing that
happens to help introduce us to the characters of the book. The middle is all the little
details that happen such as the problem in the story. The end is the last thing that
happened, how was the problem solved. I have some pictures from the story and I
need your help to sort these pictures from the beginning, middle, to end.
-The last activity we are going to do is draw a picture using some shapes! What
shapes do you see in the picture? There are quite a few triangles in the picture, what
do some of the triangles in the pictures represent? I see a shape on top of the big
rectangle. Is this a triangle? How do you know?Let’s get a piece of paper out and try
to draw this picture! After we have drawn the picture, feel free to color it in however
you would like.

Closure Everyone hold up your beautiful drawings. We learned a lot about triangles today.
Remember a shape is considered a triangle by the 3 sides and vertices it has. It does
not have to be the same size. Next time we will learn more about circles.
Exit Ticket -Students will be assessed on which side of the chart they think the picture should on
(How do you and their reasoning behind it
know he/she -Students will be assessed based on what pictures they think goes in the beginning,
got it?) middle, and end of the story

Things to work Students will learn more about circles and how they are different from other shapes.
