2) Explain the center drill and its uses.
[4 marks]
ANSWER:
Centre Drills were originally designed to create the countersink required to locate a tailstock center
when turning between centers.
A Centre Drill can also be used to provide a start location for a drill when drilling down the center of
a bar held in a Lathe chuck. Centre Drills are short and rigid enough to mark the bar center without
wandering off if they are carefully offered up to a rotating workpiece.

5) Explain THREE (3) purpose of using cutting fluids, lubricant and coolant in drilling work.
[6 marks]
ANSWER:
Cutting Fluid:
The main function of cutting fluid is keeping the drill bit cool and clean during drilling, carrying
out drill cuttings, and suspending the drill cuttings while drilling is paused and when the drilling
assembly is brought in and out of the hole.
Lubricant:
Lubricant can reduce the friction between drill bit and workpiece during drilling at the high
RPM. It also reduces the amount of wear that occurs during operation, reduces operating
temperatures, minimizes corrosion of metal surface.
Coolant:
Coolant works by directing coolant through the tool to reduce the temperature at the cutting
point while improving lubricity. This will improve the conditions for both the tool and drilling
surface resulting in reduced costs per hole, savings in tool maintenance and overall improved
result.
