General Aims:
Give students to a range of industrial equipment used in the clothing industry and enable
them to develop techniques required for developing a range of garments.
This unit gives students the opportunity to develop greater understanding of
manufacturing processes and experience in the use of industrial equipment to produce
garments to sample quality.

Specific Objectives:
By the end of these lessons, students will be able to demonstrate:
 Set up and test the industrial sewing machine
 Cut garments’ parts accurately according to the production pattern
 Apply understanding of industrial equipment to develop manufacturing skills
 Select and apply suitable techniques for working with different cloth types
 Produce a well-finished garment

Required Resources:
Staffs have
 Adequate industrial sewing machines
 Iron and ironing boards
 Stationary
 Fully illustrated procedural diagrams as handouts

Students must have


 Scissors, measuring tape, ruler, fabric, matching sewing thread, pins, machines
spool, spool case, needle, trimmer, bodkin, fusible interlining
Week wise Teaching Plan (Lectures and Practical Studios)

1st week (class 1 & 2)

 Demonstrate industrial sewing machine parts and their function; setting tensions,
insertion of needles, bobbin/spool and spool case
 Give instructions for the general care and maintenance of sewing machine
 Explain general procedure of making up a garment to ensure good quality
stitching
 Demonstrate common faults and remedies of sewing machine
 Explain how students will take precautions to ensure a safe working environment
and a good quality stitch

2nd week (class 3 & 4)

 Explain how students will take precautions to ensure a safe working environment
and a good quality stitch
 Students set up tensions, insert needles, bobbin/spool and spool case
 Explain how to solve common sewing problems
 Students sewing practice: fabric manipulation, Straight sections, back tack

3rd week (class 5 & 6)

 Students sewing practice: fabric manipulation, long straight sections, long straight
sections without guideline, angled sections, curved sections
 Students review quality and press finished samples
 Provide feedback on quality

4th week (class 7 & 8)

Making up one-piece shirt collar sample:


 Demonstrate cutting of cloth accurately
 Students cut the pieces required for making up one-piece shirt collar sample:
1. Top and under collar
2. Collar interlining
 Demonstrate the collar making up process
 Students stitch one-piece shirt collar sample
 Students review quality and press finished samples
 Provide feedback on quality
5th week (class 9 & 10)

Making up two-piece shirt collar & invisible zipper fastener sample:


 Demonstrate cutting of cloth accurately
 Students cut the pieces required for making up two-piece shirt collar& invisible
zipper fastener sample
1. Top and under collar
2. Collar interlining
3. Top and under stitching
4. Stand interlining
 Demonstrate the collar making up & invisible zipper fastener process
 Students stitch two-piece shirt collar & invisible zipper fastener sample
 Students review quality and press finished samples
 Provide feedback on quality

6th and 7th week (class 11 – 14)

Constructing culottes:
 Analysis construction of culottes sample
 Fabric cutting
 Marking darts
 Stitching darts
 Stitching front fly opening
 Joining side seams
 Attaching waist band
 Stitching hemline
 Finishing and pressing
 Feedback on quality given

8th and 9th week (class 15 – 18)

Constructing a trouser:
 Analysis construction of basic trouser sample
 Fabric cutting
 Marking darts
 Marking pockets placement
 Stitching darts
 Making up front pockets
 Stitching fly zipper opening
 Joining the right back and the left back parts
Midterm Assessment: 40
Continuous assessment – 30 (Collars & invisible zipper
attachment – 15, Culottes- 15)
Practical Exam – 5
Attendance – 5

Learning outcomes:
After completing these lessons, the student should be able to:
Develop garment manufacturing skills to sample quality
By demonstrating the ability to:
 Select and apply suitable techniques for working with different cloth types
 Produce samples showing the use of techniques and processes which are accurate
and of high quality
Apply understanding of industrial equipment to develop manufacturing skills
By demonstrating the ability to:
 Select and use machinery, hand tools and techniques suitable for identified
purposes
 Adjust and maintain industrial equipment to ensure and acceptable quality of
finish

10th and 11th week (class 19 – 22)

Constructing a trouser:
 Stitching outside seams and topstitching
 Stitching inside seams
 Preparing waistband
 Attaching waistband
 Preparing and stitching belt loops
 Attaching belt loops
 Stitching hemline
 Finishing and pressing
 Provide feedback on quality

12th, 13th, 14th and 15th week (class 23 – 30)

Constructing a shirt:
 Analysis construction of basic shirt sample
 Fabric cutting
 Marking pocket position
 Joining yoke with back body part
 Stitching button stand
 Attaching front pocket
 Stitching shoulder seams
 Applying interlining to the top collar and top stand
 Stitching the top collar to the under collar and join collar with the stand
 Preparing and stitching sleeve placket
 Attaching sleeves with body parts
 Finishing side seams
 Attaching collar
 Preparing cuffs
 Attaching cuffs
 Stitching hemline
 Finishing and pressing
 Provide feedback on quality

16th, 17th and 18th week (class 31-36)

Constructing a fitted dress:


 Analysis construction of a princess line fitted dress sample
 Fabric cutting
 Marking notches
 Joining center front and side front panels, topstitching
 Joining center back and side back panels, topstitching
 Finishing neck with facing or binding
 Attaching zipper to the center back
 Stitching shoulder seams
 Stitching hemline of sleeves
 Attaching sleeves
 Stitching side seams
 Joining lower part
 Stitching hemline
 Finishing and pressing
 Provide feedback on quality

Final Assessment: 60
Continuous assessment – 55
(Trouser- 20, Shirt- 20, Fitted dress-15)

 Realize sample garments by working from pattern and design sketches
 Plan and make sample garments in a realistic and functional way
