Stitch and Slice Baby Quilt

The Stitch and Slice Baby Quilt was crafted with a charm pack from the
Flora fabric collection by Lauren and Jessi Jung. This quilt is great for the
first time quilter and will come together in an evening or two for more
experienced quilters, with the end result being a lovely baby quilt
measuring 38 inches square. This quilt consists of 9 (13.5 inches square)
blocks and uses a disappearing nine-patch technique. Measurements
were taken after two times in each the washer and dryer.

Key Notes
1. Read through all instructions before beginning.
2. RST means Right Sides Together.
3. WOF means Width of Fabric. Most fabric is considered to be 44” wide,
because it is not usually quite that I assume 42” to be safe. If your fabric
is 44” wide, you do not need to trim it to 42”.
4. All seams ¼ inch and pressed to the darker fabric when possible.
5. Cutting and piecing carefully is key for crisp corners in this quilt.
6. The majority of these pieces can be chain pieced, allowing this quilt to
come together quickly.

Fabric Requirements
1. Quilt top –
a. One charm pack + an additional 3 squares. Or 45 five-inch
scrappy squares.
b. ¾ yard neutral fabric
2. Backing – 1.5 yards of fabric
3. Binding – 10 inches coordinating fabric (four 2.5 inch WOF strips)
4. Batting – 44 inch square
***notes on fabric selection
 Charm packs come with 42 5-inch squares, this quilt needs 45, it is
possible to cut a 5-inch WOF strip from the backing fabric and cut the
three additional 5-inch squares from this strip.
 When choosing colours for this quilt, the more contrast between the
5-inch squares and the neutral fabric the better! Contrast is what
really makes this quilt pop.
Cutting Instructions

The Stitch and Slice Quilt consists of 9 blocks – each block consists of 4
neutral squares and 5 prints/colour squares.

Preparing Fabric
1. Neutral Fabric:
a. Cut into five 5-inch strips, WOF
b. Cut each 5-inch strips into 5-inch squares (there will be eight
squares from each strip)
c. This will result in forty 5-inch squares, 36 will be used in this quilt
2. Charm squares – divide into 9 piles of five each. Make sure that the
colours and patterns are well-blended and evenly distributed.
3. Add 4 neutral squares to each pile.

Assembling Blocks:

Finishing:
1. Layer backing, batting and quilt top and secure as desired (pin, spray
baste, etc.).
2. Quilt as desired (personal note #1 – I quilted the Stitch and Slice quilt in
a lazy daisy pattern, which I sketched out with Crayola washable makers
before quilting.)
3. Binding – feel free to bind as desired, the measurements provided in the
fabric requirements are specifically for 4 x 2.5 inch binding strips but
some quilters prefer to use 2.25 inch strips. (personal note #2 – Alison
Harris from Cluck, Cluck Sew has a great machine binding tutorial that is
similar to what I use, it can be found here:

Snip stray threads, wash, dry and enjoy 
