The Greek influence still dominated women’s garments of the early nineteenth century.
Although undergarments and some corsets were repopularised .The waistlines
continued to be raised and controlled by a drawstring . King napoleon’s wife Josephine
wore elaborate versions of these gowns in heavier & printed fabrics .

The simplicity of Greek inspired costumes gave attention to headdresses . Many forms
were worn including berets , turbans and straw hats in various designs.

Eventually dresses became less revealing at the bust line . the Greek influence had
more or less disappeared by 1820. Luxurious fabrics in bright colors became very
popular . fullness was added to the to the garments sleeves _leg-of – mutton ) and
skirts . for a short time . The bust reappeared . to stay in proportion , huge hats became
the rage . The hats known as picture were bedecked with bows , ribbons and lace .

The neckline continued in their horizontal line the shoulder area was bared . sleeves
and skirts continued to become fuller and waistline was lowered ,emphasizing the bell
silhouette . Boning or cushions supported the sleeves . skirts were supported by
Crinolines. Which were bell shaped stiff undergarments made of wool and horsehair.
The tiny waists flaunted by women was achieved by painful lacing .

As the century progressed , dresses eventually became as fussy and cluttered of the
ladies ‘Victorian homes’ . The dresses presented a wide , low look that complemented
the low heavy Victorian furniture of the times . Romance flourished in mid-century
women were fainted easily. The fainting may have been caused by hunger . it was
considered distasteful for women to eat in public , so many went without food . The
massive weight of the garments along with the tight lacing at the waist may also have
caused women to faint .

The 1850’s saw the beginning of many fashion changes .Empress Eugenie Napoleon III
‘s wife set many trends with the help of her designer Charles worth . Eugenie
popularized the Bolero jacket , felt hat, and Scottish tartans. She also made crinolines.

An important fashion trend began in the mid –century known as ditto suits. The ditto suit
also made its appearance . it was a business suit . (matching man coat, waistcoat and
trouser ) usually cut in plaids or checks worn with a bowler hat. Dull colors for men’s
business wear introduced around 1820 when the soot and smoke resulting from the
industrial revolution made it impractical to wear brightly colored silks and stains . This
tradition of dark blues , black and grey still applies to the business uniform of today .

By 1870’s print shirts had been introduced into men’s wardrobes with polka dots and
stripes being quite popular . The collar of the shirt now turned over at the corner for
comfort. This collar was known as the wing collar. Once Edward vII of England was
trying on pants in a tailor’s shop. When he tried on a pair which had creased legs (from
being folded for some time ) he was pleased with slenderizing effect of the creases .
Thus began a fashion details that continues even today . sports became an important
activity in men’s leisure time. Specific garments were created for sports such as tennis ,
swimming , hunting and mountain climbing .

Hairstyle & accessories

Men wore their hair short & curled and sported side burns . that often extended tot the
chin. Popular accessories of the time included fedoras , top hats , bowlers, straw
boaters ,cloth and rubber shoes , neckties , gloves , fob watched and walking sticks .

The French revolution led to reorganization of society and the rise of the middle class .
this had a direct effect on fashion as all classes began to dress similarly . France lost it
position as head of textile production during the revolution and England look over Hence
this Era is also known as Victorian Era.

Changes which altered the world of fashion forever took place during this time .
1800 saw the arrival of ready to wear shop in the United states . a development
threatened the existence of custom tailoring . In 1840 Godey Lady’s Book The first
magazine was published, simplifying the task of communicating fashion . In 1846 the

was replaced by the frock coat . Which had an hem length at the knees and leg-of –
mutton sleeves that ended in tight wrists. The waistcoat was still quite popular and
highly decorated .The neckline became lowered and a shawl collar was added. The
cravat was now tied in a flat bow around removable collars. The removable collars was
invented by a blacksmith’s wife who was tired of providing her husband with a clean
shirt daily.
