PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.01 GENERAL
A. All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when
available, from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products
manufactured out-of-Kingdom must be approved by the Royal Commission.
B. All parts and materials shall be new, good quality, and shall be selected by the
Contractor and the manufacturer to perform as specified herein.
G. The Contractor shall have full responsibility for testing and inspection of the materials
to ensure that the equipment provided shall comply with all regulatory codes,
standards and regulations applicable to the specified service and to the requirements
of this Specification.
A. The buildings to be protected from lightning strokes and other related occurrences,
are basically divided into 2 categories as follows:
1. Class I Structures
a) The buildings with height less than 23 m fall under this category.
2. Class II Structures
a) The buildings with height equal to or more than 23 m fall under this
category.
B. The following buildings shall always be protected with a suitable Lightning Protection
System:
1. Schools.
2. Hospitals.
C. Buildings and structures other than those listed in par. 2.02 B shall be provided with
lightning protection if specified on the Contract Drawings/ Documents.
1. Copper
a) Copper shall be of the grade required for commercial electrical work and
shall be of 95% conductivity when annealed. However, copper lightning
protection materials shall not be installed on aluminum roofing, siding, or
other aluminum surfaces.
2. Copper Alloys
3. Aluminum
A. The principal components invariably used for Lightning Protection System comprises
of the following:
1. Air Terminals.
2. Down Conductors.
4. Ground Terminations
a) Ground Rods.
B. Air Terminals
3. Air Terminals shall be placed on the ridges of gable, gambrel and hip roofs of
ordinary or high slopes, and at the perimeters of flat or low-slope roofs. A shed
roof with a high or normal slope shall be considered as half of a gable roof.
4. There shall be an air terminal within 610 mm of the end of each ridge or each
corner of a flat or low-slope roof. Air terminals shall be placed within 610 mm
of the edge along the perimeter of a flat or low-slope roof.
6. Terminal base used to support air terminal shall be made of cast gun metal.
The base shall be mechanically strong, corrosion resistant and with low
electrical resistance.
C. Down Conductors
4. The reinforcing rods, not provided with corrosion protection, shall be accepted
as down conductors provided that the resistance offered by the system does
not exceed the minimum requirement. Reinforcing rods overlapped and bound
with tie-wire shall not be accepted as down conductors.
5. The metallic objects which are adjacent to the down conductors may require to
be bonded to the down conductors to avoid hazardous induced voltages.
1. Use only heavy-duty bronze connectors, splicers, bonding plates, etc., with
maximum available contact surface between the hardware and each conductor
or equipment.
5. All main size connections shall be contact cable for a length of 3.81 cm
minimum.
7. Connections below grade and all inaccessible splices shall use the exothermic
welding process. Where shown on the drawings, exothermic welds shall be
used above grade, particular for connections to building steel and similar
items.
E. Ground Terminations
1. Ground Rods
b) The ground rod shall be either solid copper or stainless steel or copper
bonded steel cored rod as specified on the Contract Drawings.
However following factors shall be considered while selecting the
ground rods:
1) Copper bonded steel earth rods are preferred when high tensile
strength and low cost are of prime importance. Minimum of
0.25 mm thick layer of 99.9% pure electrolytic copper shall be
molecularly bonded into steel core to avoid dissimilar metal
reaction.
2) Solid copper rods shall be used where soil conditions are very
aggressive such as high salt content to offer high level of
corrosion resistance.
3) Stainless steel rod shall be used to avoid the problem of galvanic
corrosion which can take place between dissimilar metal buried in
close proximity.
c) Suitable driving heads shall be used for deep driving of ground rods into
ground and suitable couplers shall be used to join 2 ground rods, if
required.
a) Buried bare copper conductor shall run round the building or structure
and shall be installed outside the foundations.
c) Where down conductors are used to carry the current of lightning stroke,
bare copper conductor shall be installed 1 m outside the building to a
minimum depth of 0.5 m.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 GENERAL
A. The Contractor shall provide all materials, equipment and labor as deemed
necessary for complete and proper execution of the work.
B. After the installation is complete and properly adjusted, the Contractor shall conduct
operating tests. The various equipment and systems shall be demonstrated to
operate in accordance with the requirements of the Specifications. Tests shall be
performed in the presence of the Royal Commission's representative. The Contractor
shall provide electric power, instruments and personnel necessary for performing the
various tests.
A. General
2. All the facilities required for transportation of electrical equipment from store to
site such as competent manpower, crane and trucks of adequate capacities
shall be supplied by the Contractor.
3. All equipment moved to the site shall be inspected for damage or deterioration
during storage. Tag numbers and nameplates shall be verified with the details
given on the Contract Drawings.
4. The lightning protection Contractor shall work with other trade Contractors to
ensure a correct, neat and inconspicuous installation. It shall be the
responsibility of the lightning protection Contractor to assure a proper bond to
the appropriate grounded utilities; such as the electric service ground,
telephone ground, and incoming water pipe, etc.
B. Installation of LPS
2. Copper conductors, which pass over cast stone, cut stone, architectural
concrete and masonry surfaces, shall have minimum sheath of 2 mm
thickness of lead to prevent staining of the exterior finish surfaces.
4. Air Terminals
a) Air terminals shall be installed as high as possible and such that the
zone of protection is at least 254 mm higher than the structure and
equipment that they are protecting.
b) Air terminals exceeding 610 mm in height above the area or object they
are to protect shall be supported at a point not less than one-half their
height.
5. Down Conductors
d) Down conductors shall be installed and run on the structures with the
support of clamps.
6. Ground Rods
c) The ground rods shall extend vertically not less than 3 m into the earth.
The earth shall be compacted and made tight against the length of the
conductor or ground rod.
d) Where multiple ground rods are used, the separation between any
2 ground rods shall be at least equal to the length of the longer of
2 adjacent rods where practicable.
A. General
1. The Contractor shall carry out all site tests in accordance with approved test
procedure to ensure that the equipment and materials comply with the
Specifications and operational requirements. All tests are subject to witnessing
by the Royal Commission representatives.
2. At least 4 weeks prior to scheduled tests, the Contractor shall submit to Royal
Commission an outline of the plan and procedures to be used in performing
the site inspection and site tests. This outline shall include a brief description
of the test equipment, connection diagrams, proposed tests and procedures,
test sheets, calculations, reference drawings and minimum/maximum test and
performance values in conformance with applicable standards which will be
used to determine conformance with the Specification and acceptability of the
equipment and installation.
2. Check that all down conductors are installed properly and are intact prior to
being covered by interior, exterior or other installations.
3. Check for any loose connections for grounding system prior to burial to avoid
high resistance joints.
4. Check that no part of LPS has been weakened due to vibration during
installation.
5. Check that all conductors and system components are fastened securely to
their mounting surfaces and are protected against accidental mechanical
displacement as required.
6. Check that all Lightning Protection System connections are torqued to the
proper design values furnished by manufacturer.
