PART 1 GENERAL

A. This Section specifies minimum technical requirements for designing, manufacturing,


supplying, installing, storing, handling, testing and commissioning of Lightning
Protection System as specified and shown on the Contract Drawings/Documents.

1.04 REFERENCES

A. The referred codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of
quality for materials and products. In case of conflict between these standards and
the text of this Specification, the Specification text shall govern.

B. The latest revision of the referred codes and standards shall be used wherever
applicable. In case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment conforming to
one group of codes and standards.

1.05 DEFINITIONS

A. air terminal: The lightning rod or intended attachment conductor placed on or above
a building, structure, tower, for the purpose of intercepting direct lightning stroke.

B. bond: The electrical connection between two metallic surfaces established to provide
a low resistance path between them.

C. bonded: The joining of metallic parts to form an electrically conductive path to


assure electrical continuity and the capacity to conduct current imposed between the
metallic parts.

D. down conductor: Part of the external Lightning Protection System which is intended
to conduct the lightning current from the air-termination to the earth-termination.

E. lightning protection system (LPS): A complete system of strike termination


devices, conductors, ground terminals, interconnecting conductors, surge
suppression devices, and other connectors or fittings required to complete the
system.

F. sideflash: An electrical spark caused by differences of potential, that occurs


between conductive metal bodies or between conductive metal bodies and a
component of a lightning protection system or ground.

G. test well (access well): A small covered opening in the earth using concrete, clay
pipe or other wall material to provide access to an earth electrode system
connection.

H. zone of protection: The space adjacent to a lightning protection system that is


substantially immune to direct lightning flashes.

1.06 SUBMITTALS

A. The Contractor shall submit to the Royal Commission, under the provisions of

SECTION 01330, the following items for review and approval before commencing
Work:

1. Shop Drawings shall include:

a) A complete drawing list/index identifying all drawings in the shop


drawing package.

b) Legend, symbols and specialized terminology used on the drawings.

c) Layout of air terminals, access well, ground rod, bonding connections to


metal objects, bonding connections to structure, and ground electrodes.
Shop Drawings shall include sizes for air terminals, conductors, ground
electrodes, and connection/termination details.

2. Data Sheets and Specifications.

3. Manufacturer’s Data and Instruction

a) Manufacturer’s catalogs giving description of the equipment and its


components.

b) Storage and handling Instructions.

c) Installation instructions.

d) Part List.

e) Illustrations and diagram of components.

f) Recommended list of spare parts along with price list.

g) Factory test report.

4. Quality Program as specified in SECTION 01450.

B. The Contractor shall submit Field Test Report after completion of testing and
commissioning.

1.07 QUALITY CONTROL

A. The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of Work and shall develop and
propose programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified
quality to the approval of the Royal Commission in accordance with
SECTION 01450.

1.08 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

A. All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in full


accordance with the respective health and safety requirements established by the
following:

1. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

a) Legislation, Regulation, Standards and Codes.

2. Royal Commission Regulations

a) Standards, Contractual Conditions, and Health and Safety Systems.

3. Contractor

a) Health and Safety Standards and Systems as accepted by the Royal


Commission.

B. In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall be
employed throughout.

1.09 FACTORY TEST

A. All equipment/material shall be tested at factory in accordance with latest applicable


codes and standards. All type tests as per applicable codes and standards shall be
performed on first unit of every new design. The Contractor shall notify the Royal
Commission in writing not less than 30 days prior to the scheduled starting date of
the factory tests.

B. The Royal Commission reserves the right of deputing their representative for
witnessing the factory test.

C. Upon completion of factory test and before shipment of the equipment/material, the
Contractor shall submit 5 certified copies of test reports not later than 10 days after
completion of all factory test for review/approval by the Royal Commission.

1.10 SERVICE CONDITION

A. Lightning Protection System installed indoor shall be suitable for continuous


operation under the following service conditions:

1. Ambient Air Temperature

a) A maximum of 40°C.

b) A minimum of 0°C.

c) Average temperature measured over a period of 1 month is 35°C.

2. Average Value of Relative Humidity

a) For a period of 24 hours does not exceed 95%.

b) For a period of 1 month does not exceed 90%.

c) Relative humidity may be temporarily 100%.

B. Lightning Protection System installed outdoors shall be suitable for continuous


operation under the following service conditions:

1. Ambient Air Temperature

a) A maximum of 50°C.

b) A minimum of 0°C.

c) Average temperature measured over a period of 1 month is 45°C.

2. Altitude is less than 1000 m, unless a higher altitude is specified in the


Contract Drawings/Documents.

3. Average Value of Relative Humidity

a) For a period of 24 hours does not exceed 95%.

b) For a period of 1 month does not exceed 90%.

c) Relative humidity may be temporarily 100%.

1.11 DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE

A. The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store equipment and material units in
accordance with SECTIONS 01650 and 01660 as well as the following requirements:

1. Provide marking on each item in accordance with the referenced standards.


Ship each unit securely wrapped, crated and wrapped or packaged and
labeled for safe handling in shipment and to avoid damage or distortion.

2. On arrival at site, the equipment/material shall be checked for completeness


and physical damage.

3. Store equipment in secure and dry storage facility as recommended by


manufacturer.

4. Protect all units from physical damage from work of other trades.

5. The Contractor shall be responsible for any damage occurring during


transportation, handling and storage of the equipment.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 GENERAL

A. All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when
available, from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products
manufactured out-of-Kingdom must be approved by the Royal Commission.

B. All parts and materials shall be new, good quality, and shall be selected by the
Contractor and the manufacturer to perform as specified herein.

C. The Equipment Supplied:

1. Shall fully confirm to or exceed the minimum requirements specified in this


Specification.

2. Shall be a product of an original manufacturer.

3. Shall be factory assembled and tested to the extent possible so as to minimize


field erection.

D. Items or components of the equipment not specifically covered herein shall be in


accordance with latest editions of the referenced codes and standards.

E. The components of assembled unit shall be UL listed or approved by a testing


laboratory acceptable to the Royal Commission.

F. Reliability and maximum service continuity shall be the fundamental considerations


of engineering, design, operational functions and material used in the design of
components and manufacturing.

G. The Contractor shall have full responsibility for testing and inspection of the materials
to ensure that the equipment provided shall comply with all regulatory codes,
standards and regulations applicable to the specified service and to the requirements
of this Specification.

2.02 LIGHTNING PROTECTION OF BUILDINGS

A. The buildings to be protected from lightning strokes and other related occurrences,
are basically divided into 2 categories as follows:

1. Class I Structures

a) The buildings with height less than 23 m fall under this category.

2. Class II Structures

a) The buildings with height equal to or more than 23 m fall under this
category.

B. The following buildings shall always be protected with a suitable Lightning Protection
System:

1. Schools.

2. Hospitals.

3. Buildings and structures over 30 m.

4. Buildings and structures where expected lightning strike frequency to the


structure exceeds tolerable lightning strike frequency as specified in
Appendix H of NFPA 780.

C. Buildings and structures other than those listed in par. 2.02 B shall be provided with
lightning protection if specified on the Contract Drawings/ Documents.

2.03 MATERIAL USED FOR LIGHTNING PROTECTION

A. Protection systems shall be made of materials that are resistant to corrosion or


protected against corrosion. Combinations of materials that form electrolytic couples
of such a nature that in the presence of moisture corrosion is accelerated, shall not
be used. One or more of the following material shall be used:

1. Copper

a) Copper shall be of the grade required for commercial electrical work and
shall be of 95% conductivity when annealed. However, copper lightning
protection materials shall not be installed on aluminum roofing, siding, or
other aluminum surfaces.

2. Copper Alloys

a) Copper alloy shall be as resistant to corrosion as copper.

3. Aluminum

a) Conductors shall be of electrical grade aluminum. However, aluminum


lightning protection material shall not be installed:
1) Where contact with the earth is possible or where rapid
deterioration is possible.
2) On copper surfaces.

B. Class I structures shall be protected from lightning strokes by Class I materials as


shown in Table 3.1.1(a) of NFPA 780.

C. Class II structures shall be protected from lightning strokes by Class II materials as


shown in Table 3.1.1(b) of NFPA 780.

D. For all structures containing explosives or flammable materials, regardless of heights,


Class II materials shall be used.

2.04 COMPONENT PARTS FOR LPS

A. The principal components invariably used for Lightning Protection System comprises
of the following:

1. Air Terminals.

2. Down Conductors.

3. Connectors and Fittings.

4. Ground Terminations

a) Ground Rods.

b) Buried Bare Copper Conductors.

B. Air Terminals

1. Air terminals shall be 10 mm minimum diameter for solid copper or 12.7 mm


minimum for solid aluminum. Air terminals shall extend above the protected
object at least by 254 mm but no more than 915 mm. If over 610 mm high, air
terminals shall be suitably braced.

2. Air terminals up to 610 mm high shall be spaced at intervals of 6.1 m or less;


those 610 mm or higher shall be spaced 7.6 m or less.

3. Air Terminals shall be placed on the ridges of gable, gambrel and hip roofs of
ordinary or high slopes, and at the perimeters of flat or low-slope roofs. A shed
roof with a high or normal slope shall be considered as half of a gable roof.

4. There shall be an air terminal within 610 mm of the end of each ridge or each
corner of a flat or low-slope roof. Air terminals shall be placed within 610 mm
of the edge along the perimeter of a flat or low-slope roof.

5. Chimney air terminals may be anchored directly, or secured by an acceptable


metal band around the chimney. No outside corner of a chimney shall be more
that 610 mm from an air terminal.

6. Terminal base used to support air terminal shall be made of cast gun metal.
The base shall be mechanically strong, corrosion resistant and with low
electrical resistance.

C. Down Conductors

1. Minimum of 2 down conductors shall be provided on any kind of structure


except for flag poles, masts, spires or similar structures where 1 down
conductor is permitted.

2. The total number of down conductors on structures having flat or gently


sloping roofs and on irregular shaped structures shall be such that the average
distance between down conductors does not exceed 30 m.

3. The bends in down conductor which embraces a portion of a building such as


eaves shall not have a radius of less than 200 mm. The angle of any turn shall
not exceed 90° and conductors shall everywhere preserve a downward or
horizontal course.

4. The reinforcing rods, not provided with corrosion protection, shall be accepted
as down conductors provided that the resistance offered by the system does
not exceed the minimum requirement. Reinforcing rods overlapped and bound
with tie-wire shall not be accepted as down conductors.

5. The metallic objects which are adjacent to the down conductors may require to
be bonded to the down conductors to avoid hazardous induced voltages.

D. Connectors and Fittings

1. Use only heavy-duty bronze connectors, splicers, bonding plates, etc., with
maximum available contact surface between the hardware and each conductor
or equipment.

2. Each conductor shall be held in place by appropriate clamping device with at


least 2 hex head bolts.

3. Bonding plates shall have a minimum of 412.90 cm2 of contact surface.

4. For pipes, railings, fence post, etc. up to approximately 11.43 cm in diameter


shall use heavy-duty bronze pipe clamps, where available, in lieu of bonding
straps.

5. All main size connections shall be contact cable for a length of 3.81 cm
minimum.

6. Split-bolt type connectors shall not be used.

7. Connections below grade and all inaccessible splices shall use the exothermic
welding process. Where shown on the drawings, exothermic welds shall be
used above grade, particular for connections to building steel and similar
items.

E. Ground Terminations

1. Ground Rods

a) Ground rods shall not be less than 19 mm in diameter and 3 m long.


Rods shall be free of paint or nonconductive coatings.

b) The ground rod shall be either solid copper or stainless steel or copper
bonded steel cored rod as specified on the Contract Drawings.
However following factors shall be considered while selecting the
ground rods:
1) Copper bonded steel earth rods are preferred when high tensile
strength and low cost are of prime importance. Minimum of
0.25 mm thick layer of 99.9% pure electrolytic copper shall be
molecularly bonded into steel core to avoid dissimilar metal

reaction.
2) Solid copper rods shall be used where soil conditions are very
aggressive such as high salt content to offer high level of
corrosion resistance.
3) Stainless steel rod shall be used to avoid the problem of galvanic
corrosion which can take place between dissimilar metal buried in
close proximity.

c) Suitable driving heads shall be used for deep driving of ground rods into
ground and suitable couplers shall be used to join 2 ground rods, if
required.

2. Buried Bare Copper Conductor

a) Buried bare copper conductor shall run round the building or structure
and shall be installed outside the foundations.

b) The conductor shall be installed before the foundation and bonded to


reinforcing rods of reinforced concrete foundations or building as
specified in par. 2.04 C.4 except where concrete reinforcement has
corrosion protection.

c) Where down conductors are used to carry the current of lightning stroke,
bare copper conductor shall be installed 1 m outside the building to a
minimum depth of 0.5 m.

3. The earth resistance of all lightning protection grounding terminations shall be


tested by clamping to any convenient part of the lightning protective system.

4. The combined resistance to earth of the whole of the lightning protection


system shall be as low as economically possible but shall not exceed minimum
required value of 5 ohms.

5. Where other grounds such as substation grids or consumer grounding exists,


they shall be bonded to the lightning protection grounds. The intent is to
minimize risk due to differential voltages causing personnel hazard or side-
flash possibilities. This shall not be interpreted to mean that separate lightning
grounding means are not required. If the installation is such that the risk will be
increased by cross-bonding, then no such interconnection shall be made.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 GENERAL

A. The Contractor shall provide all materials, equipment and labor as deemed
necessary for complete and proper execution of the work.

B. After the installation is complete and properly adjusted, the Contractor shall conduct
operating tests. The various equipment and systems shall be demonstrated to
operate in accordance with the requirements of the Specifications. Tests shall be
performed in the presence of the Royal Commission's representative. The Contractor
shall provide electric power, instruments and personnel necessary for performing the
various tests.

3.02 INSTALLATION OF EQUIPMENT

A. General

1. All installation details, write up on handling of the equipment, instruction


manuals and latest revised drawings furnished by manufacturer shall be
available at site prior to installation of the equipment. These details shall be
reviewed by the Royal Commission’s representative. The details and
instructions furnished in these documents shall be followed carefully during
installation of the equipment.

2. All the facilities required for transportation of electrical equipment from store to
site such as competent manpower, crane and trucks of adequate capacities
shall be supplied by the Contractor.

3. All equipment moved to the site shall be inspected for damage or deterioration
during storage. Tag numbers and nameplates shall be verified with the details
given on the Contract Drawings.

4. The lightning protection Contractor shall work with other trade Contractors to
ensure a correct, neat and inconspicuous installation. It shall be the
responsibility of the lightning protection Contractor to assure a proper bond to
the appropriate grounded utilities; such as the electric service ground,
telephone ground, and incoming water pipe, etc.

B. Installation of LPS

1. Lightning Protection System shall be installed as indicated on the Contract


Drawings, in accordance with manufacturer’s written instructions, UL 96A,
NFPA 780 and other codes and standards as specified in par. 1.04.

2. Copper conductors, which pass over cast stone, cut stone, architectural
concrete and masonry surfaces, shall have minimum sheath of 2 mm
thickness of lead to prevent staining of the exterior finish surfaces.

3. Make connections of dissimilar metal with bimetallic type fittings to prevent


electrolytic action.

4. Air Terminals

a) Air terminals shall be installed as high as possible and such that the
zone of protection is at least 254 mm higher than the structure and
equipment that they are protecting.

b) Air terminals exceeding 610 mm in height above the area or object they
are to protect shall be supported at a point not less than one-half their
height.

c) Air terminals shall be secured to the structure or wall properly against


overturning by one of the following methods:
1) Attachment to the object to be protected.
2) Braces that are permanently and rigidly attached to the building.

5. Down Conductors

a) Reinforcing steel of concrete structures and roof conductors of the


building shall be bonded to the down conductors as shown on the
Contract Drawings.

b) The down conductor shall be protected for a minimum distance of 1.8 m


above grade level to prevent physical damage or displacement.

c) Down conductors entering corrosive soil shall be protected against


corrosion by a protective covering such as lead sheath, beginning at a
point 0.9 m above grade level and extending for their entire length below
grade.

d) Down conductors shall be installed and run on the structures with the
support of clamps.

6. Ground Rods

a) Each down conductor shall terminate at a ground rod dedicated to the


Lightning Protection System.

b) The down conductors shall be attached permanently to the grounding


electrode system by bolting, brazing, welding, or high-compression
connectors listed for the purpose as specified on the Contract Drawing
and shall be suitable for direct burial.

c) The ground rods shall extend vertically not less than 3 m into the earth.
The earth shall be compacted and made tight against the length of the
conductor or ground rod.

d) Where multiple ground rods are used, the separation between any
2 ground rods shall be at least equal to the length of the longer of
2 adjacent rods where practicable.

7. Ground Rod Test Wells

a) Ground rod test wells shall be installed as shown on the Drawings.

These test wells are required to measure grounding resistance of


Lightning Protection System.

3.03 TESTING AND COMMISSIONING

A. General

1. The Contractor shall carry out all site tests in accordance with approved test
procedure to ensure that the equipment and materials comply with the
Specifications and operational requirements. All tests are subject to witnessing
by the Royal Commission representatives.

2. At least 4 weeks prior to scheduled tests, the Contractor shall submit to Royal
Commission an outline of the plan and procedures to be used in performing
the site inspection and site tests. This outline shall include a brief description
of the test equipment, connection diagrams, proposed tests and procedures,
test sheets, calculations, reference drawings and minimum/maximum test and
performance values in conformance with applicable standards which will be
used to determine conformance with the Specification and acceptability of the
equipment and installation.

3. Upon completion of installation and prior to final acceptance, each component


of each system shall be tested to the complete satisfaction of the Royal
Commission. The various equipment and systems shall be demonstrated to
operate in accordance with the requirements of the Specifications.

4. The Contractor shall provide all test instrumentation, equipment and


accessories necessary for demonstration and putting the equipment into
operation.

5. All testing equipment shall be calibrated by approved authorities and


calibration certificate shall be provided to Royal Commission for their review
and approval.

6. Upon completion of all testing, the Contractor shall submit 5 copies of a


certified report attesting that each test has been performed in accordance with
the approved test procedures. The report for each test shall include the name
of the person in charge of test and the date of performance. All factory and
field test reports shall be included in Operation and Maintenance Manuals.

B. Checking and Testing of LPS

1. Check that there has been no visual indication of damage.

2. Check that all down conductors are installed properly and are intact prior to
being covered by interior, exterior or other installations.

3. Check for any loose connections for grounding system prior to burial to avoid
high resistance joints.

4. Check that no part of LPS has been weakened due to vibration during
installation.

5. Check that all conductors and system components are fastened securely to
their mounting surfaces and are protected against accidental mechanical
displacement as required.

6. Check that all Lightning Protection System connections are torqued to the
proper design values furnished by manufacturer.

7. Test the ground resistance of Lightning Protection System to earth by standard


method and confirm that the ground resistance is less than 5 ohms.
