Celebrating The Natural World

Minoan Art can be generally described as classic, detailed and there is also a

consistent color palatte they use. They’re art is definitely a reflection of the

environment they created which is of peace, security and joy. They highly favored

applying an emphasis of the natural world in their art. It struck me as interesting that

they happen to be the the first urban civilzations to construct Palaces. Not only was

the Natural world an influence in their art but also in their architecture and geography.

For instance, with a “mazelike arrangement of rooms” and a “careful control of the

sun’s penetration into living spaces through light wells.”

The painting, “Queen’s Megaron” is a fine example of they’re expression of

nature. The painting has a major sea theme, with sea creatures and a color palatte of

blues and creams. There’s also a surrounding frame of green plants and rocks. It’s

visible that they’res consistency of colors and patterns, it makes it very appealing and

it gives a warm welcome to the viewer. I can appreciate the variety they have in their

paintings, for example in the painted landscape called, “Spring Fresno” painted are

lillies flowers in three.

The ocean seems to be a common theme, they have that displayed in other rooms

at the Akrotiri. They painted ferry ships, it’s a massive scenery with dolphins as well.

Pottery was also used as form of canvas whereas they have detailed paint on their

vases. They’re pottery is known for the extensive shape and size. There’s a major

sense of creativity hence the Kamares Ware, the vases neck has an upwards curve into

a beak shape, the vase painter enhanced it by adding an eye; I like that detail.
