Seismic Example:

- The building is using Concrete masonry units (CMU) and it’s having Intermediate reinforced
masonry shear walls.
- The building is having concrete moment resisting frame.
- Dead load for the roof is 20 psf.
- Wall CMU weight = 95 psf (per wall area, not thickness).
- Building plan area is 100 ft * 140 ft.
- Building height is 20ft.
- Building occupancy = Hospital.
- Soil type (soft soil profile).
- Seismic fault maps: Ss= 125%g & S1= 40%g

Find:
- Seismic base shear V and seismic weight W.

Solution:

- Building occupancy = Hospital ------> Occupancy category IV (from table 1604.5) ---------
> Importance factor (I) = 1.5 (from table 11.5-1).
- Ss= 1.25g & S1= 0.4g.
- Site class: E for the soil type (soft soil profile) (from table 1613.5.2).
Site coefficients:
- Fa= 0.9 (from table 11.4-1).
- Fv= 2.4 (from table 11.4-2).
Maximum earthquake spectral response:
- SMS = Fa * Ss = 0.9*1.25g = 1.125g.
- SM1 = Fv * S1 = 2.4*0.4g = 0.96g.
Design spectral acceleration:
- SDS= 2/3 * SMS = 2/3 *(1.125g) = 0.75g.
- SD1= 2/3 * SM1 = 2/3 *(0.96g) = 0.64g.
Seismic design category:
- SDC: for SDS > 0.5 ---------> Occupancy category IV----------> SDC: D (from table 11.6-1).
- Ta= Ct (hn)x = 0.016 *(20)0.9 = 0.237 sec.
Response modification coefficient:
- R = 4 from table 12.2-1. (item #18 category B. BIIILDING FRAME SYSTEMS)

Seismic response coefficient

- Cs = SDS / (R/I) = 0.75 / (4/1.5) = 0.281.
- Check Cs max = SD1 / [Ta *((R/I)] = 0.64 / [0.237 *(4/1.5)] = 1.012 OK Cs ˂ Cs max.
- Check Cs min = 0.01 because S1˂ 0.6g ----------> OK Cs> Cs min.
Base shear V and seismic weight W
- Base shear V = Cs * W = 0.281 W.
- Seismic weight W= ½ * 20’ * (100+140+100+140)*95 + 20 (100*140) = 456000+ 280000=
736000 Ib.
- Base shear V = Cs * W = 0.281* 736000= 206 kips.
