1. PURPOSE
Tesla Motors part number (PN) is used to provide a unique identifier for a specific part or assembly within Tesla Motors
organization. All 10 digits in the part numbering scheme constitute a PN. The Tesla part number allows for identification
and tracking of components physically, in warehouses, on production-floors, and virtually, in company records and
databases.
Change to any of the three segments represents a PN change. Parts that have different 10 digit numbers should never be
assumed to be interchangeable. Any change to a part that impacts the form, fit, or function must be documented with a
change to the Tesla part number. Part history documented through the ECO process is the only mechanism to confirm
interchangeability of parts with different ten digit numbers.
Tesla does not use a “smart” part numbering system. Some concessions have been made to allow the last three of the ten
digits in the part number to be managed by users, at their discretion, for the purposes outlined in the Style Code and
Pedigree sections below. There is no company-wide structure for how these digits should or must be used.
2. SCOPE
This document applies to parts and assemblies intended as components of production end items; regardless of maturity
and/or build event (i.e. also applies to prototype). Tooling, fixtures, machines, or any other design elements that would
benefit from document and change control can make use of this system.

Revision
Part Number
Part Number:
Each combination of Base Number + Style Code + Pedigree constitutes a unique part number.
Style code:
2 digits, alphanumeric, user defined at time of part number origination
Used to tie multiple products or designs together by way of the same base part number
Style codes can be used to relate groups of unique parts in any way that is useful to the user. There are no
centrally managed or endorsed rules on the use of these two digits.
Change to Style code represents fit / form / function change
Pedigree:
One digit, alpha, user defined, sequentially incremented.
Used to represent iterations of the same base number and style code.
At engineering discretion, the pedigree can be incremented for other reasons to enable distinguishing and tracing
parts.
Change to Pedigree represents fit / form / function change.
Interchangeability of parts should not be assumed when pedigree changes.
