Subject: Mathematics

Grade: 2

Topic: Shapes

Sub-Topic: Polygons

Focus Question: How do family members relate to each other?

Date: March 15-19, 2021

Duration: 5×1hr

Objectives: After instruction, reasoning and activities students should be able to:

Ø Identify three shapes that have open and closed pathways.

Ø Complete a table; categorizing shapes with their number of sides

Ø Identify shapes by the number of sides and angles.

Ø Represent shapes by drawing

Key Vocabulary: triangle, rectangle, square, rhombus, trapezium, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon,

octagon, nonagon, decagon.

Instructional Materials: Primary Mathematics for Jamaica, Rediscovering Mathematics Text,

songs and videos.

Content: An open shape has a starting point and an end point however closed shape has the

same starting point and end point. There are many closed shapes, a closed shape bounded by

at least three line segments is called a polygon. The line segments forming a polygon are called

sides for example; triangle; three sides and quadrilaterals; four sides.
DAY 1

Engage: Students will view different lines on the board and describe what they observe and tell

the difference between the two sets of shapes. For example; one is the shape of a polygon and the

other isn’t complete. Students will critique different lines.

Explore: Students will be told to describe the shapes with the words open path and closed path.

Students will look on each set of shapes again and identify the shape with the open and closed

path.

Students will complete page 17 in their Primary Mathematics Textbook.

Explain: Based on students’ response, teacher will explain that an open path has a starting and

an end point however; a closed path has the same beginning and end point.

Elaborate: Students will work individually to identify open or closed shapes by joining dots to

form a complete or incomplete figure/shape.

Evaluate: Students will complete pages 18 and 19 of their Primary Mathematics for Jamaica

textbook.

Day 2:

Engage: Students will watch a YouTube video on the different shapes.

Students will view different shapes and try to identify them as seen in the video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4E7sjcXUfww

Explore: Students will count how many sides and angles each shape has and try to identify them

based on their number of sides.

Explain: Students should come to the conclusion that a closed shape with more than three sides

is called a polygon and we can name the polygons based on their number of sides.

Elaborate: Students will complete a table writing the names of polygons with their

corresponding number of sides.

Evaluate: Students complete chalkboard exercises in which they will draw different polygons

and count the number of sides in order to name them.

Students will complete page 55 in their Primary Mathematics for Jamaica Textbook.

Day 3:

Engage: Students will sing the shapes song out loud. “ A Polygon Oohh”

Explore: Students will view cut out shapes and match them with their correct names of a word

card. Students will complete a live worksheet to label shapes on a chart.

Explain: Students will say how they were able to match each shape to its name and if the song

they sung had helped.

Elaborate: Students will draw different polygons to show their understanding.

For example; students will draw picture of a triangle, a quadrilateral and a heptagon.

Students will peer critique each others’ work by checking to see if each polygon has the correct

number of sides.

Evaluate: Students will complete textbook exercises in their Rediscovering Mathematics

Textbook.

Students will complete a live worksheet on Polygons.

DAY 4:

Engage: Students will sing the polygon song

“A poly-gon ohh name them by the number of sides (rept)

The Triangle …..has 3 side

The Quadrilateral…….has 4 sides

The Pentagon…..has 5 sides etc until they reach to Decagon which has 10 sides”

Explore: Students will students will view several shapes and will be given instructions. For

example; circle all the quadrilaterals.

Students should be able to recognize that a trapezium, rhombus, square and the rectangle are all

quadrilaterals because they all have four sides and four angles.
Students will complete a live worksheet exercise

Explain: Teacher will once again explain that polygons are shapes with closed paths that are

named based on their number of sides and can be regular or irregular.

Elaborate: Students will complete the activity on page 208 in their Rediscovering Mathematics

textbook where they will view and picture and say how many polygons they can find in the

picture of a building and the amount of each polygon.

Evaluate: Students will complete two live worksheets exercises.

DAY 5 :

Engage: Students will sing the polygon song

“A poly-gon ohh name them by the number of sides (rept)

The Triangle …..has 3 side

The Quadrilateral…….has 4 sides

The Pentagon…..has 5 sides etc until they reach to Decagon which has 10 sides”

Explore: Students will students will view and complete a fill in the blank activity to correctly

identify polygons.

Explain: Teacher will once again explain that polygons are shapes with closed paths that are

named based on their number of sides.

Elaborate: Students will create a “Polygon Man” using only geometric shapes. Students will say

how many polygons they can find on their and how many of each different polygons are there.
Evaluate: Students will complete page 118, 119 and 120 in their Primary Mathematics for

Jamaica Textbook.
