Unit 08 Biochemistry

Unit 08 Lesson 01: Properties of Water

1. Draw a water molecule and label the polar ends.

2. Why is a water molecule Polar? What force is attracting the electrons tot the oxygen?
A water molecule is polar because it contains negative and positive charges that are attracted to each
other. Hydrogen bonding is what is keeping the atoms together.

3. Describe how hydrogen bonds form between the water molecules.

Each of the hydrogen molecules shares one electron with the oxygen molecule (covalent bonding).
The positivity of the hydrogen atoms and the negativity of the oxygen atom lead to hydrogen
bonding between the molecules, making the molecules stick together.
1. Draw a picture to illustrate your description.

4.
4.
4.
What type of bond is found between the Hydrogen and the Oxygen of a water molecule? Describe it.
This type of bond is called a covalent bond, where the hydrogen atoms are each sharing their electron with
the oxygen molecule.

5. Why is water considered the universal Solvent?

Because it can dissolve any other ionic or polar substance.

6. What is a solute? How is a Solution made?

A solute is a substance that dissolves. A solution is made by dissolving a substance (solute) into another
substance (solvent).
Cohesion occurs when water molecules are strongly attracted to one another.

7. Describe COHESION and draw a picture

8. How does Cohesion give us surface tension?

Cohesion occurs on the top of a body of water, creating a tight surface.

9. How does a Meniscus show Adhesion?

The water is attracted to the glass on the side of the cylinder.

10. How do living organisms take advantage of water’s High Specific Heat? Why is it important to the
homeostasis of the organism?
The water inside an organism acts as a thermal regulator. For example, we sweat when we get to hot,
lowering our body temperature. It is important to homeostasis because it pushes towards a stable
internal environment.
