Volleyball Captain

Fall Season 2019

Jordan Jaguars, Jordan High School, MN

During my senior year of high school, I was a captain for our volleyball team. All captains were
required to fulfil specific duties/responsibilities. A few things that were expected by captains
were having a good attitude, demonstrating leadership, working hard in practice and in games,
encouraging others, and representing the team. A few responsibilities captains had, were to
attend the coin toss at the beginning of the game, pulling the team together, and most of all
being a role model to the team.

Reflection

To be a captain is an honor, it is not something that is given to you but rather something that is
earned. Teams look up to their captains and see them as a role model. I will forever be grateful
for the experience of being a captain. I gained so much from this experience that has and will
continue to help me in so many aspects of my life.

I feel that having been a captain, I have become a better leader. I would say I have always been
better at leading by example, but I learned how to also be a vocal leader. Knowing your team is
counting on you and looks up to you pushes you to not only get better but also be the best you
can be.

This experience relates to Honors because of the responsibility that I took on. I learned how to
bring everyone together, get others to trust me, how to make the team better, become a better
leader and an all-around person. My experience with being a captain is one I will never forget
that I will forever be thankful for because of the way it impacted me and made me a better
person.

Now What

Having the opportunity to be a captain has provided me with so much. Not only was I able to
provide and give so much to my teammates but also gained and learned so much. I learned so
much about leadership and what makes a good leader which will help me in so many different
aspects of my life. It also changed the way I look at/see different things and how leadership can
be applied. There is still so much that I can learn about leadership and apply to my everyday
life. I am looking forward to all the opportunities that are still out there and everything I have
yet to learn regarding leadership. I will forever be grateful for my opportunity with being a
captain and everything I learned from it.
