GEOTHERMAL POWERPLANT WORKSHEET

Explain inside the box how geothermal powerplant operates by using the 8
words listed below.

Magma
Magma convection is the primary driving mechanism by which geothermal energy is brought
1. to the earth. In this process, hot magma rises up close to the surface and cold ones sinks
further deep into the mantle. As hot magma rises in the mantle, it is brought close to the
surface and crustal levels.
Reservoir
They work by piping hot steam from underground reservoirs directly into turbines
2. from geothermal reservoirs, which power the generators to provide electricity. After
powering the turbines, the steam condenses into water and is piped back into the earth via
the injection well.
Turbine
Rotational energy from the turning turbine shaft is used directly to spin magnets inside a
3. large coil and create electrical current. The turbine and generator are the primary pieces of
equipment used to convert geothermal energy to electrical energy.
Generator
In a turbine generator, a moving fluid—water, steam, combustion gases, or air—pushes a
4. series of blades mounted on a rotor shaft. The force of the fluid on the blades spins/rotates
the rotor shaft of a generator. The generator, in turn, converts the mechanical
(kinetic) energy of the rotor to electrical energy
Transformer
Electrical current from the generator is sent to a step-up transformer outside the power
5. plant. Voltage is increased in the transformer and electrical current is transmitted
over power lines to homes, buildings, and businesses.
Electric Mains
Geothermal power plants use steam to produce electricity. The steam comes from
6. reservoirs of hot water found a few miles or more below the earth's surface. The steam
rotates a turbine that activates a generator, which produces electricity.
Condenser
After the steam passes through the turbine, it continues to a condenser chamber. This
7. chamber condenses the steam back into liquid water by cooling it. The excess heat lost as
the steam turns to liquid water may be used for other applications, such as heating or
greenhouse farming.
Cooling tower
Geothermal heat pumps use the constant temperatures near the surface of the earth to heat
8. and cool buildings. Geothermal heat pumps transfer heat from the ground (or water)
into buildings during the winter and reverse the process in the summer.
