Teacher: Daniel Austin Subject: Math (Touch Grade Level: Special

Dot Math) Education 3rd-8th

Addition
Overall Goal of Lesson: Students will be able to add efficiently using Touch Dots.
Students will also be able to count numbers 1-9 using touch dot math.
Instructional Objectives: By the end of this class students will be able to:
1. To count numbers 1-9
2. How to properly make touch dots
3. How to put numbers in proper place value while adding
4. How to carry numbers
Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) Key Vocabulary: Place Value, Touch
& ELPS: Dots, Add, Carry
111.5 (A) (4) (B) (4) (A)
Higher Order Questions: Can you show me how to add? Have you ever added using two
digits before? Can you name a mathematician?
Student Activities: (Keep in mind the following: Scaffolding, Independent or Cooperative
activities, Groupings, Reading, Writing, Listening, Hands-On/Minds-On, Connections to
previous knowledge, etc)
This is working on student's addition skills as well as auditory, visual, and kinesthetic skills.
Modifications/ELL Strategies: Anticipatory Activity for Lesson:
Using touch dot strip and number Counting from numbers 1-10 and doing math
line warm-ups with kahoot
Time Teacher Input/Lesson Activity:
20mins Students will be at their desk while making their number line and converting that
into a touch dot number line. Once the students have mastered their touch dot
number line, they will raise their green card to show the teacher who will make
sure they have correctly placed the correct number of dots on the number. Then
students will move on to adding with the touch dot system. Students will show the
teacher they have mastered the concept of adding with touch dots by making one
touch dot problem for the teacher and showing how to do the problem.
Modeling: I will model how to draw touch dots on the students touch dot strip.
Also, how to count the touch dots while adding.

5mins Guided Practice: We will work example problems together adding using our
touch dot system. If students have any questions, we will visit them here.
Independent Practice:
Students will work independently on addition using touch dot system.
Lesson Closure:
The student whom is in charge of supplies will pick up the supplies and put
them in their proper place. The student who is in charge of picking up the
papers will do so and place them face down on the teacher's desk.
Assessment Methods/Strategies:
I will be able to see if students understand the touch dot system by asking
them to show me how to properly place the correct dots on the correct
numbers 1-9. Also, students will show me how to add using the touch dots by
with a review to see if we need to revisit anything to go back over with. If not,
we will proceed with a test at the end of the week
5mins

10mins
Resources (supplies, equipment, software, etc.):
1. Paper
2. Markers
3. Scissors
4. Touch Screen (Assistive Technology)
5. Calculators
6. Pencils
7. Number Line

Reflection:
This will help students who have a hard time counting to make it easier for them with the
touch dots. This also, helps students with place value to line up the numbers to make sure
it is correct. This gives every student a chance to be involved in the lesson with being
hands on even showing their peers who need extra help. This will be with them for many
years and you can do touch dot addition with almost any arithmetic.
