Attempt ALL questions. Assume the suitable data wherever necessary.

1. What qualities in bricks are essentially required from construction point of view? Explain
the methods of manufacturing of bricks and give comparison between two methods.

2. Explain the use of stones in Civil Engineering. Explain the Geological, Physical and
Chemical classification of rocks with examples. [2+3=5]

3. Define soundness of cement. How do you perform the experiment to find the soundness
of cement? Explain in detail. Explain the difference between Fat lime, Hydraulic lime
and Poor lime. [2.5+2.5=5]

4. How does the bulking of sand differ with the different percentage of moisture content?
Explain in detail showing graph. On which condition Wet process is better than Dry
process. Explain the modern process of manufacturing of cement with flow diagram.

5. What are the different methods which are used to make the hydration of cement
continuous? Explain in details. Explain the stress- strain relationship of non-linear elastic
material concrete with neat sketch. [2+3=5]

6. Give the relation between water cement ratio, strength and workability of concrete. How
is the strength of concrete affected by the properties of aggregate? Explain in detail.

7. Using I.S Method, design a concrete mix for reinforced concrete structure using Ordinary
Portland cement of grade 43 with 28 days strength 51 N/mm2, if the superplasticiser is
used as a chemical admixture and the Characteristic compressive strength of the concrete
is 40 N/mm2, (Design for pumpable concrete with fly ash). [5]
