What I Need to Know
Media and Information Literacy is a core subject for Senior High
School learners which introduces the learners to basic understanding of
media and information as channels of communication and tools for the
development of individuals and societies. It also aims to develop students
to be creative and critical thinkers as well as responsible users and
competent producers of media and information.

UNESCO defines Media and Information Literacy as a set of competencies that


empowers citizens to access, retrieve, understand, evaluate and use, to create as well as
share information and media content in all formats, using various tools, in a critical, ethical
and effective way, in order to participate and engage in personal, professional and societal
activities.

In this module, you will be identifying the similarities and differences between and
among media literacy, information literacy, and technology literacy

This module aims to help you explore and develop your media and information
literacy skills.

As you go through this module, brace yourself and be sure to read and follow each
instruction.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this module, you should be able to:

1. define the key concepts in media and information literacy course,


2. identify the similarities and differences between and among media
literacy, information literacy, and technology literacy and
3. editorialize the value of being media and information literate individual.

What I Know
Pre- Assessment: In this part of the module, you will be answering fifteen
(15) test items that aims to assess your prior knowledge on the differences

among media literacy, information literacy, and technology literacy. This assessment does
not have equivalent points but is required to be completed. Be honest and answer it with the
best knowledge you have.

Instruction: Identify what literacy is being described by each item and write the
corresponding letter of the best and correct answer.

human capabilities.

through communication channels.

of the mass media, the techniques used by them, and the impact of these techniques.
____6. It is decoding, evaluating, analyzing and producing wide range of formats including
print, nonprint, and electronic.
____7. It is defined as a set of competencies that empowers citizens to access, retrieve,
understand, evaluate and use, create, as well as share information and media content in
all formats, using various tools, a critical, ethical and effective way, in order to participate
and engage in personal, professional and societal activities.
____8. It is easily utilizing a variety of digital devices (e.g., computers, smartphones, tablets)
and interfaces (e.g., e-mail, internet, social media, cloud computing) to communicate,
troubleshoot and problem solve in both academic and non-academic surroundings.
____9. It is recognizing message quality, authenticity and credibility.
____10. It is the ability to safely, responsibly, creatively, and effectively use appropriate
technology to build and share knowledge.
____11. It is the ability to understand media, technology and information as channels of
communication and tools for the development of individuals and societies.MIL
____12. The ability of an individual, either working independently or with others, to
responsibly, appropriately, and effectively use technological tools.
____13. The ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media in a variety of forms.
____14. The ability to recognize when information is needed, and to locate, evaluate and
effectively communicate information in its various formats.
____15. The essential skills and competencies that allow individuals to engage with media
and other information providers effectively, as well as develop critical thinking and life-
long learning skills to socialize and become active citizens.

1. What means of communication was used in the picture?

Media are the physical objects used to communicate with, or the mass
communication through physical objects such as radio, television,
computers, film, etc. It also refers to any physical object used to
communicate messages.

2. What is being communicated in those pictures?


Information is a broad term that covers processed data, knowledge
derived from study, experience, instruction, signals or symbols.

3. Are the individuals in the pictures competent or knowledgeable in a situation they are in?
Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate
and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying
contexts. Literacy involves a continuum of learning, wherein individuals are
able to achieve their goals, develop their knowledge and potential, and
participate fully in their community and wider society.

4. Which picture illustrates media literacy?

Media Literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media in a
variety of forms. It aims to empower citizens by providing them with the
competencies (knowledge and skills) necessary to engage with traditional media
and new technologies.

a. An awareness of the impact of media.
b. An understanding of the process of mass communication.
c. Strategies for analyzing and discussing media messages.
d. An understanding of media content as a text that provides insight into our culture and
our lives.
e. The ability to enjoy, understand, and appreciate media content.
f. An understanding of the ethical and moral obligations of media practitioners.
g. Development of appropriate and effective production skills.
h. Critical thinking skills enabling the development of independent judgments about media
content

Information Literacy is the ability to recognize when information is needed, and to
locate, evaluate, and effectively communicate information in its various formats.
Elements:
a. Identifying/recognizing information needs
b. Determining sources of information
c. Citing or searching for information
d. Analyzing and evaluating the quality of Information
e. Organizing, storing or archiving information
f. Using information in an ethical, efficient and effective way
g. Creating and communicating new knowledge

Technology Literacy is the ability of an individual, either working independently or
with others, to responsibly, appropriately, and effectively use technological tools.
Using these tools an individual can access, manage, integrate, evaluate, create
and communicate information.
Elements:
a. Basic knowledge about technology (e.g., an understanding of the concepts of
systems, feedback, trade-offs)
b. Basic technical capabilities, such as being able to work with a computer and to
identify and fix simple problems in the technological devices used at home and in the
office
c. Think critically about technological issues and act accordingly (e.g., should
construction of a new coal-fired power plant be supported or opposed)

7. What is media and information literacy?


Media and Information Literacy is the essential skills and competencies that
allow individuals to engage with media and other information providers effectively,
as well as develop critical thinking and life-long learning skills to socialize and
become active citizens.
