What’s In
Let’s review! In this part of the module, you will be answering a crossword
puzzle which will evaluate how much you remember about media and
information terms.

Instruction: Complete the crossword puzzle on the next page. Write the words
being described by the clues provided. Write the letters on the boxes.

What’s New

Let’s get started! Read the text below and identify how people
communicate with each other.

Consider what happens on the early hours of a normal school day for you: You
wake up before 6:00 a.m. to prepare for school. You go to the living room and your
father has just turned on the television and the theme music of the early morning
show blares through the huge speakers. The shrill voice of the female host greets you. She talks about
the latest exercise gadgets and cites how social media hashtags such as #fitspiration and

5
#balikalindog have actually inspired us to take on fitness as both hobby and lifestyle. Here comes now
a team of incredibly muscle-toned bodies gyrating to the beat of workout music.
You sit, enjoy your breakfast, and turn to the newspaper that has been left lying
around. You shuffle through its pages. The lifestyle page is always your first destination.
There you read about a fashion soothsayer who talks about the emerging deeds in clothes and
accessories for young people. You take your morning bath as swift as you can, examine the
color of your skin as you dress up, and wonder when you will finally see the results of the
whitening lotion laced with glutathione that this erstwhile morena teenybopper endorses with
her newfound air of self-confidence.
You gather your things to leave for school and your smart phone sends a bleep until
you find a private message (PM) waiting in your Facebook messenger. Your best friend just
sent you a link to the online store where the prices of clothes have now been slashed to half of
their original prices. You wonder if you can wager what is left of your allowance or if your
mother's remittances from Dubai will come in soon so you can buy those ripped jeans you
have been desiring for some time.
You hop into the school bus and the radio speakers blare out a hit tune from this
Korean pop group and yes, it has been announced, they are coming to town. What to do? You
ask yourself. You stare out the window and a tabloid flashes its headline for today " Mga
teroristang Muslim, umatake sa simbahan ng GenSan." Your turn your head to the other
direction. The school bus driver shifts to the AM station and cues you to the latest news about
the Senate hearing for the overpriced city buildings built by a city mayor. These stories are
worth a sigh and you feel a sense of exasperation because one devoted an hour discussing the
issue of public accountability.
The bus has arrived in front of the school premises. The gates of the school have been
lined with tarpaulin banners bearing the logo of the country's leading telecommunications
company. For a moment, you wonder about the logo's ubiquitous presence and its tagline
"Connecting People" sprawling all over the place, until you realize they are this year's main
sponsor for the upcoming school fair.

What I can do
Let’s apply! Read the article and answer the questions on the next
page.

FALSE: COVID-19 not real, Bill Gates behind the disease

The Facebook pages that reposted the video credited a certain Jessie Ugalde for the post.
According to Ugalde, a 2015 video of Bill Gates proves that the billionaire already predicted the
coronavirus pandemic.
“Si Bill Gates, 2015 pa lang sinabi na n'ya – may video ‘yan, kahit panoorin 'nyo sa YouTube –
na maghanda raw tayo sa COVID na darating. Bakit, Diyos ba siya? Diyos lang ang nakakaalam
sa lahat sa kung anong bagay na darating,” he said.
(Bill Gates already said back in 2015 that we should prepare for COVID. There’s a video
of it on YouTube. Why, is he God? God is the only one who knows of the things to come.)
Ugalde also said that Gates is in charge of the World Health Organization (WHO) and that
he wants everyone to be implanted with a microchip with the number 666. He said COVID-19
really means “certification of vaccination identity,” and questioned why many people recover
from the disease despite having no vaccine yet.
At least 3 Facebook pages that reposted Ugalde’s video were flagged by Claim Check,
Facebook’s monitoring tool. The posts combined had 10,478 reactions, 3,883 comments, and
26,379 shares as of writing. They were viewed over 923,000 times.
* The viral video contains several unproven conspiracy theories that were already debunked by
fact checking organizations
