VISUAL INFORMATION AND MEDIA

VISUAL INFORMATION
It is the artistic or creative representation or interpretation of an idea, concept, or
emotion using different media.

CREATORS OF VISUAL INFORMATION


1. Painter. A painter refers to a person who produces a work of art with colors, lines,
and shapes using paint as medium.

2. Photographer. Taking picture or images using a camera is the photographer’s


primary job. A photographer can be classified as either an amateur or a
professional.
3. Graphic artist or designer. A graphic artist or designer sets the images,
illustrations, charts, and tables on the manuscript. He is responsible for the artwork
and design using electronic media.
4. Sculptor. They create a piece of art using a variety of media, such as clay, marble,
wood, or even ice.
TYPES OF VISUAL INFORMATION

1. PAINTING
It is an art form that creates
pictures using a flat mediums,
such as canvas or board, and
paint.
a. LANDSCAPE – shows an
outdoor scene. A landscape
artist uses paint to create
images of land, water, and
clouds, as well as other
elements like air, wind, and
sunlight.

b. PORTRAIT – it shows an “The Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh

resembles how the person looks like and captures the person’s mood or
personality.
c. STILL LIFE – Shows inanimate objects as subjects, such as musical instruments.
It could also be flowers or food on display. A painter can show his artistic skills in
painting shapes, light, and shadow.
d. ICON – refers to a painting of Jesus Christ or other religious figures identified with
the Roman Catholic Church, which proliferated during the Byzantine Empire.

2. PHOTO
It is worth a thousand words. It can tell a story or even let the viewer feel emotions
by just looking at it. Photo also used as evidences to document historical events.

3. SCULPTURE
It is an example of a three-dimensional artwork that can be made using clay, stone,
metal, or other materials. It shows a replica of the subject or model.

4. CARTOON/COMIC STRIP
It shows illustrations or drawings arranged sequentially in boxes. The main
character of this strip illustrations depict
different character that are drawn in
cartoon. A comic strip narrates an
amusing story.

CHARLES M. SCHULZ is the creative


genius behind the famous Peanuts comic
strip. The main character of this comic
strip is the boy named Charlie Brown. He
is generally shy but admirably loyal to his friend and cares for his pet beagle and
buddy, Snoopy, who also creates his own adventure. The comic strip ran from October
2, 1950 to February 13, 2000.

Kenkoy The first Filipino comic strip. It appeared in


Liwayway magazine on January 11, 1929. It was the
brainchild of Romualdo Ramos and illustrated by Tony
Velasquez. Apart from bringing humor, it reflects
Filipino culture during the American period. It shows
how a Filipino like him tries to adopt to Western
influences, which often brought him (mis)adventures
or wacky antics. It also has a romantic side, showing
him courting his love interest, Rosing, the immaculate
and impeccable Manileña.

5. GRAPHS AND CHARTS


A graph pertains to a diagram, which is a series of one or more points, lines, line
segments, curves of areas. It shows variables with corresponding interpretation
illustrating a trend or phenomenon. A chart shows information through a table,
diagram, or graph.

6. BILLBOARD AND POSTER


Billboard refers to a large outdoor board
containing text information and images or designs as
a form of advertisement. A poster is similar to a
billboard but is much smaller. It is also used as
means of announcement or advertisement.

EVALUATING & RATING VISUAL INFORMATION


1. Use of color. Visual information is a form of art and media. The output is partly
screened based on the kinds of color used such as primary and secondary colors,
pastel, or dark colors. The kind of colors used depends on the theme and subject.

2. Use of medium. Aside from the use of color, we can evaluate visual media by the
type of medium used. The kind of medium used add value to the message of the visual
media and creates more impact.
3. Level of creativity. Visual media is also rated based on its level of creativity and
artistic sense.
4. Choice of subject. A painting or a photo is a form of expression for the artist. Their
choice of subject is important because it will determine how the audience will interpret
or react to their work.
5. Choice of theme or message. Visual media is a very powerful tool in sendin g a
message, especially if the images used were able to move the viewer or the audience.

ADVANTAGES OF VISUAL INFORMATION


1. It catches the attention of the audience because of its artistic presentation.
2. It teaches the audience to be more analytical in order to visually process the message.
3. It allows the artist to present the information and express the message in a creative
manner.

LIMITATIONS OF VISUAL INFORMATION


1. It can be distracting. The audience might lose sight of the message in the process of
deciphering or interpreting the visual presentation.
2. Its meaning could be interpreted differently because of its artistic presentation.
3. It takes time and effort to produce visual information, which can be costly, too.
