About FNTI (First Nations Technical Institute)

Since establishment in 1985, over 4000 students have graduated successfully from FNTI with
certificates, diplomas and degrees, granted in partnership with Ontario’s Colleges and
Universities. An Indigenous post-secondary institution, FNTI offers programs targeted at
Indigenous learners across a wide range of post-secondary disciplines including aviation,
health, business, and public administration. FNTI delivers programming locally through its main
campus in Tyendinaga on Ontario’s beautiful Bay of Quinte, as well as in numerous community
locations throughout Ontario.

Description:

Under the direction of the Manager, Indigenous Court Services and Restorative Justice, the
Youth Justice Court Worker is responsible for regularly attending all youth courts within
Hastings & Prince Edward and Lennox & Addington Counties and supporting Indigenous youth
(ages 12-1) that are involved in the Criminal Courts of Hastings/Prince Edward and Lennox &
Addington Counties.

Responsibilities:

• Advocating to the courts on behalf of the client and ensuring that the rights of the youth
are being met
• Providing information to the courts about the client
• Providing services that address specific, assessed needs of Indigenous youth
• Promote Restorative Justice within the courts and community
• Provide culturally appropriate restorative program for each client
• Implementing and supporting healing plans for clients
• Providing written reports for the courts
• Attending courts within outlined jurisdictions
• Working collaboratively with other justice partners
• Providing culturally relevant information to the courts and justice partners
• Facilitate restorative justice circles when applicable
• Providing cultural awareness workshops to off territory agencies that work with
indigenous youth
• Working alongside Indigenous Youth Justice Worker (EJM)
• Maintain documentation of client files
• Recording statistics
• Provide support services to Tontakaie:rine
• Other duties as required

Qualifications:

• Successful completion of post-secondary education in criminal justice and or social


work
• Successful completion of an accredited course in mediation or alternative justice
practices
• Understanding of the court system specifically the YCJA
• Experience and understanding of Indigenous youth in care
• Knowledge and understanding of the restorative justice program
• Knowledge of Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA)
• Knowledge of conventional court practices/diversion process
• Knowledge of alternative conflict resolution processes
• Knowledge of Indigenous cultures and teachings
