Accessibility Assignment
Apple provides many accessibility features for all of their products such as; the iPhone, iPad,
iPod Touch, Macbook Pro, etc. I am going to focus on accessibility features that Apple provides
on the iPad. Over the past few years, the iPad has improved and evolved tremendously. Apple is
constantly adding new features to their products especially the iPad. I have categorized the main
accessibility features which will be numbered 1-3 and then for each category I will describe a
couple of features that are offered for each category in more detail.

1. Vision Accessibility Features:

a. Voice Over
- Apple offers the voice over feature. This feature is designed to describe
what is happening on your devices screen. In other words, you are able to
hear what is happening on your screen. Apple describes this feature as
“VoiceOver is an industry-leading screen reader that describes exactly
what’s happening on your device.” This feature makes it easier to navigate
through your screen whether you’re on the internet looking at websites,
doing homework, or even playing a game.
- This feature is available on the iPad and other Apple ios devices.
b. Voice Over & Braille
- Another option that comes with the voice over feature is Braille. How it
works is voice over can give you descriptions in braille and it makes
working in braille a lot easier. You can also use the braille display through
a bluetooth to your iPad where you are able to directly enter braille on
your screen. If you are using braille on your screen, it will automatically
convert to normal text so sighted people can follow along as well.
- This feature is available on the iPad and other Apple ios devices.

2. Mobility Accessibility Features:

a. Dictation
- Dictation is a feature that allows you to speak whatever you want to type.
Apple explains that “It’s easy to type an email, notes, or a web address —
without typing at all.” All you need to do is tap the microphone icon on
the screen’s keyboard, speak, and the device will type out the words along
with numbers and characters.
- This feature is available on the iPad and other Apple ios devices.
b. Assistive Touch
- This feature allows you to adjust your touchscreen to fit and adapt to your
physical needs. For example, if certain movements such as tapping does
not work for you, you can change them to a different movement or gesture
that Apple suggests, or you can create your own gesture that is completely
unique to you and fits your needs.
- This feature is available on the iPad and other Apple ios devices.

3. Hearing Accessibility Features:

a. Sound Recognition
- This feature is a relatively new feature to Apple. Apple describes it as “Sound the
alarm without hearing a sound.” The sound recognition listens for certain sounds
around you and will notify when it hears that sound. For example, if you are in a
building and the fire alarm sounds, the sound recognition feature will notify you
on your screen that a fire alarm sound has been detected.
- This feature is only available for the iPad and iPhone.
b. Scribble
- Scribble is a feature that allows you to slide your finger across the screen’s
keyboard and the “scribble” will automatically convert it to a typed out word or
text.
- This feature is available on iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch.
