TIME PROBLEM: - AUDITORIUM

University is in demand of a new auditorium in this new technology world. A new


contemporary style auditorium is required with new norms and design ideas in the case which
should be more acoustically feasible and comfortable using new technologies and material
exploration. So, the site adjacent to the existing auditorium is proposed for the new design.
Auditorium is designed to accommodate large audience in a single roof and it’s an evitable
component in any university. They may have various forms and designs in order to
accommodate the seating, sightlines and acoustical requirements. They also need raised
floors/stages and special lighting for the nature of its purpose. They should provide better
experience with best design features. Everything in an auditorium should be designed in such
a way that they provide the audience good acoustics, lighting and better views.

DESIGN OBJECTIVES AND SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES:
CAPACITY – 500 PEOPLE
Design an auditorium for 500 people with proper norms and conditions according to the NBC
and Delhi building rules.

The design should occupy:


- Entrance – lobby, exhibition area
- The main auditorium – stage and a comfortable audience seating
- Backstage – green room, rehearsal room, dressing room, toilet, store room
- Support spaces – projection room, public toilets (male and female), office spaces
(managers room, curator room) , Maintenance room, AV control room.

The design should be under proper considerations to:


- Proper sightlines
- Special acoustical design
Proper data collection of the auditorium is required:
- Referring Neuferts, Time Savers, and NBC.
Quality acoustical characteristics are important in Auditorium spaces so that performances and
presentations can be clearly heard and understood. It includes detailed material and finishes
study.
- Materials and finishes
- Proper HVAC or cooling system
- Lighting is also as important as sound quality
- And consideration for wheelchair users.

The design question is flexible to the students in such a way that they can explore more on the
innovative and technological aspects for the designing of the span, acoustical requirements,
lighting, seating arrangements, materials and finishes, sound system, etc. Students should
provide all mandatory services for the smooth functioning of the auditorium.

AREA REQUIREMENTS
FAR – 1.2
ECS – 2 / 100 sqm of floor area
GROUND COVERAGE – 30 %
SETBACKS – Front -9m, rear and sides -6m
MAXIMUM HEIGHT – 26 m
PLAN AREA: Plan area of the building is to be fixed at an occupant load of range 0.6 to
0.9m²/member.
SEATING REQUIREMENTS: Width of the seat should be between 45 to 56cm.The back-to-
back distance of the chairs shall be at least 85cm.
DOOR AND WINDOW REQUIREMENTS: Every exit of the auditorium shall provide a clear
opening space of not less than 1.5m in width.
Staircase – minimum width 2 m. minimum travel distance 30 m.
