4SL32AM Installation Manual BSL5.2v LiFePO Battery installation manual Ist Edition Jan2021 Battery Details The BSL 5.2V battery has been specially designed and manufac- tured for the solar and backup system installations industry. It is a sixteen cell LiFePO4 chemistry battery with the capacity to run in both single or parallel setups, meaning that additional batterries can be placed as required without running risk of system rejection. The built-in BMS (Battery Management System) features canbus ca- pabilities and is designed to manage the battery in the event of commonly encountered faults which can arrise from inverter based installations. The BMS is also capable of communicating between batteries, giving you the added benefit of battery balancing and keeping the system as efficient as possible. 1- POSITIVE TERMINAL, 6 - STATE OF CHARGE INDICATOR LED'S T- CANBUS PORT 2 - NEGATIVE TERMINAL, 7 - RESET/ON/OFF BUTTON 12- RS232 PORT 3- POWER INDICATOR LED 8 - DIP SWITCHES 15 - SLAVE RS485 PORTS. 4+ RUN INDICATOR LED. 9 - DRY CONTACTS 14- TRIPSWITCH 5- ALARM INDICATOR LED 10 - MASTER RS485 PORT Installing the BSL 51.2V LiFePO4 Battery The correct installation is key to getting the best out of your BSL battery. For optimum results, the following installation guidelines should be followed. Wiring. The cabling thickness needed from the batteries to the system is ex- plained on page3, this is important as the correct thickness gives the best current flow through the system. An incorrect thickness can lead to problems in the charge and discharge of the batteries. When wiring the battery, make sure not to switch the polarity of your wires, positive and negative must not be switched! This may seem silly, yet it is important to make sure you are correct in this as if you accidentally switch the wires, you will short circuit the BMS and the battery will no longer function and need a costly repair. Fusing. Once mounted and wired, the battery leads should be protected with the correct sizing of DC disconnect fusing in place for the load. A single battery requires a 125amp fuse. 2 batteries, a 165amp fuse. 3 or higher, a 200amp fuse is required. Inverter connection When connecting a battery to the inverter, please ensure that the correct dipswitch for a single battery is set, the BMS will not acti- vate and in the case of a smart inverter, will not pick-up the battery if this is not set. If parallel batteries are put into a system, the sup- plied cabling should be used, the batteries must also be connected via the supplied RJ45 communication cables as to allow for smooth transition of current and communication between the two or more batteries BMS’s (Battery Monitoring System). It is also important to make sure that the dipswitches are correctly placed and that the master is set via the Can-bus cable to the inverter (this is only im- portant in the case of an inverter with the correct communication firmware for the battery) For any inverter without Can-bus commu- nication, the battery must be set to voltage settings alone, the volt- ages are given under the voltage settings on page3. Battery Setup 1. A type “B” communication cable will be required for CANBUS communication between the battery and smart hybrid inverter 2. A BMV should be used in place if the inverter is not capable of CANBUS communication 3. A total of fifteen batteries can be placed in parallel, however each battery will need a unique binary address. This can be setup via the dipswitches on the front of the battery. Please see dip- switch setting parameters below. 4. Master battery is always the battery with dipswitch one ON and is also where the “CAN” communication cable is connected to, the port is marked CAN. No terminator is required for the battery. 5. When installing more than one battery in parallel, a standard RI45 Patch network cable will be required for inter battery communication. These will need to be connected to the slave RS485 ports on the right of the batteries. 6. The battery cable recommended size for batteries in parallel are: - 1x battery = 35mm? - 2x batteries = SOmm? - 3x batteries = 70mm? or 2 x 35mm2 - 4x batteries = 95mm? or 2 x 5S0mm2 7. It is recommended to use a common rail copper busbar when installing more than four batteries in parallel. All positive and negative cables must be of the same length and batteries equally grouped as possible 8. Port 1(RS485) and Port3(RS485) are used for programming and retrieving of data only and must be left open.
