1 Scope
1.1 This specification prescribes the requirements that apply to carbon steel and low
alloy steel piping components for use in services with design minimum
temperatures within the range of -18°C to -45°C.
1.2 Components included are butt welding pipe fittings such as elbows, tees,
welding outlets, reducers, caps, and lap joint stub ends < NPS 24, as well as
blind flanges, spectacle plates, spacers and slip blinds. Pipe is not included as a
piping component and is not addressed in this specification.
1.3 This specification is intended to apply to purchase of "loose" components and is
not mandatory for components installed on equipment that is engineered,
manufactured, and tested prior to delivery to Saudi Aramco.
1.4 Socket-welding and threaded fittings less than 2-inch NPS are excluded from
this specification.
2 Conflicts And Deviations
2.1 Any conflicts between this specification and other applicable Saudi Aramco
Materials System Specifications (SAMSSs), Engineering Standards (SAESs),
Standard Drawings (SASDs), or industry standards, codes, and forms shall be
resolved in writing by the Company or Buyer Representative through the
Manager, Consulting Services Department of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.
2.2 Direct all requests to deviate from this specification in writing to the Company
or Buyer Representative, who shall follow internal company procedure SAEP-
302 and forward such requests to the Manager, Consulting Services Department
of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.
3 References

American Society for Testing Materials
ASTM A350 Carbon and Low-Alloy Steel Forgings, Requiring
Notch Toughness Testing for Piping
Components
ASTM A370 Test Methods and Definitions for Mechanical
Testing of Steel Products
ASTM A420 Piping Fittings of Wrought Carbon Steel and
Alloy Steel for Low Temperature Service
ASTM A516 Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, for
Moderate- and Lower-Temperature Service
4 General
4.1 Purchase Order Information shall indicate the following: type of pipe
component, grade, nominal size, wall thickness of matching pipe for butt
welding fittings; bore and flange rating in addition to nominal size for flanges.
Requirement for SAES-A-301 shall be indicated if applicable.
4.2 All components shall be seamless, unless otherwise approved by the Company
or Buyer representative.
5 Materials
5.1 Acceptable materials are ASTM A420 Grade WPL 3, ASTM A420 Grade WPL
6, and ASTM A350 Grade LF2 when they are tested and inspected in
accordance with this specification. ASTM A516 plate may be used for blind
flanges, spectacle plates, spacers and slip blinds when tested and inspected in
accordance with this specification.
5.2 Impact Requirements
5.2.1 Grade WPL 3 materials shall be tested as specified in ASTM A420.
5.2.2 Grade WPL 6 materials shall be tested as specified in ASTM A420
except that the required Charpy V-notch impact values shall be 34/27 J
(25/20 ft-lbs) for standard 10 mm by 10 mm specimens. For subsize
specimens the provisions of ASME B31.3 Para. 323.3 shall apply.

In the notation of required Charpy Values such as 25/20, the first number
is the average energy of three specimens while the second number is the
minimum for any one specimen.
The provisions in ASTM A350 Para. 7.2.4 for subsize specimens and test
temperature reduction are the same as in ASME B31.3 Para. 323.3.
5.2.3 Grade LF2 materials shall be tested as specified in ASTM A350 except
that the required Charpy V-notch impact values shall be 34/27 J (25/20
ft-lbs) for standard 10 mm by 10 mm specimens.
5.2.4 ASTM A516 plate, used for blind flanges, spectacle plates, blinds, and
spacers, shall be tested as specified in ASTM A516 S2, S5, S12 and the
required longitudinal Charpy V-notch impact values shall be 34/27 J
(25/20 ft-lbs) for standard 10 mm by 10 mm specimens. For subsize
specimens the provisions of ASME B31.3 Para. 323.3 shall apply.
5.3 Butt welding pipe fittings shall also comply with 02-SAMSS-005.
5.4 Piping components shall comply with the requirements of SAES-A-301 when
specified in the Purchase Order.
Commentary Note:
SAES-A-301 is not normally specified for butt-welding pipe fittings per 02-
SAMSS-005 because 02-SAMSS-005 requirements are consistent with
SAES-A-301 and are considered by Saudi Aramco to be adequate for sour
service.

6 Inspection And Testing

6.1 General
Components purchased in accordance with this specification are subject to the
requirements of Inspection Form 175-023400 in addition to the inspection
requirements in the basis specifications.
6.2 Visual Inspection and Dimensional Check
General appearance, workmanship and fit-up shall be acceptable in accordance
with ASME B31.3 Para. 344.2. For welded fittings, the outside and inside weld
bead shall not exceed 3.2 mm and edges of welds shall merge smoothly into the
pipe surface.
6.3 Tests
Tests of mechanical properties and nondestructive tests shall be done in
accordance with the requirements of the basis specification. All test results shall
be reported.
7 Documentation
Three (3) copies of all mill certificates and all other test results required by this
specification shall be supplied in the English language.
8 Product Marking
Piping components shall be marked in accordance with ASTM A420 or ASTM A350 as
appropriate. For easy identification all components shall have an approximately 25 mm
wide orange stripe painted over the longitudinal axis. Components that cannot be
painted as such, shall be painted completely orange. Flanges shall have the rim painted
orange. All other required markings shall remain legible or be restored after the orange
paint is applied. The paint shall be lead free.
9 Export Packing, Marking And Shipping
Export packing, marking and shipping shall be in accordance with the Purchase
Requisition/Purchase Order.
