Subgroup Mission

Identify, prioritize, and execute research and

development testing, evaluation and
commercialization efforts that satisfy
interagency requirements for physical
security support to protect personnel, vital
equipment, and facilities against terrorist
activity.

Rail Passenger
and Baggage Screening
Problem: How do we screen passengers and
bags for explosives at stations like these?
Issues: High passenger throughput, little or
no station manning, little or no space for
screening equipment.
Railcar Screening
of Passengers & Baggage
Goal
¾ Integrate explosives screening technologies into a
passenger (pax) railcar for mobile screening at
unmanned rail stations
Motivations
¾Mobile - bring the screening equipment to the station
¾Compact - must fit into a pax railcar and allow screened
pax to pass through to seating areas in other cars
¾Screening for bulk explosives is primary mission
(Madrid)
Transportable Screening
Box
• Same equipment
as Railcar
• Install in Dry cargo
container, MILVAN,
or similar
• Power from
integrated or
auxiliary GENSET
or local power
• Can be stored
remotely and
placed when and
where needed, but
needs crane to get
off and on flatbed
trailer plus level
pad.
• Lower unit cost,
but higher cost to
position
Screening Training Guides
Requirement: Pocket-sized screening reference
guides for Security and Force Protection personnel.
