HPN and Yogurt

A recent study, which followed more than 5,000 Spanish university graduates for about two
years, found a link between dairy intake and risk of high blood pressure.''We observed a 50%
reduction in the risk of developing high blood pressure among people eating 2-3 servings of low-
fat dairy a day (or more), compared with those without any intake,'' Alvaro Alonso, MD, PhD, a
researcher in the department of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, said in an
email interview. Although most of the low-fat dairy consumed by the study subjects was as milk,
Alvaro believes low-fat yogurt would likely have the same effect.

According to Lori Morca, MD, PhD, from her book entitled Heart to Heart, hypertensive clients
should limit their dairy intake and should choose to take 3 cups of low fat and non-fat milk or the
equivalent such as low-fat and non-fat yogurt. Yogurts are high in protein, calcium, phosphorus,
niacin, riboflavin, and vitamins A and D and have been shown as part of balanced diet, to help
lower an maintain blood pressure

HPN:

According to Divine (2006), Hypertension has been refered to as the “silent-killer” for years
because it often develops few of no symptoms. He stated that usually, other than having a
history of high blood pressure, a person having this condition has no indication of its existence,
although hypertension can lead to several additional health problems that do not have
symptoms.

Johnson (2006) Doctors distinguish between two types of hypertension – secondary and
essential (primary). Which type you have depends on whether the cause of hypertension can be
identified. The exact cause formost cases of high blood pressure is unknown but there are lots
and lots of theories.A smaller number of people with high blood have it as a result of a condition.

YOGURT:

According to Murray (2010), Non-fat yogurt certainly has a lot to offer. As a protein source, it is complete,
so it can be used as the basis for meals, substituting for high-fat meats. It provides bone-building calcium
in a dose as great as that from a glass of milk but can be digested more easily when live, active bacterial
cultures are present. It also features riboflavin, vitamin B12, and many minerals.
It's believed that the bacterial cultures used to make yogurt (Lactobacillus bulgaricus and L. acidophilus,
L. bifidus, and Streptococcus thermophilu) carry their own health benefits. Research suggests that eating
yogurt regularly helps boost immune function, warding off colds and possibly cancer. It's also thought that
the friendly bacteria in yogurt help improve colon health as well as prevent and cure diarrhea. Another
study has demonstrated that women plagued with chronic vaginal yeast infections found protection by
eating a daily dose of bacteria-toting yogurt.
