My Values in Life

My name is Ilias brown. I was born and raised in Cushing, Oklahoma. Cushing is a small

town with a population size of only 7,600 people, give or take. There are hundreds of oil tanks

all around our small town, making it a popular destination for oil companies. My family moved

around in different houses within the town, many with crazy memories, such as bugs and even

murder in the neighborhood. As I grew older my family grew bigger, now with four brothers and

of course my parents. Half of my life, I spent with them and the other half I lived with my

grandparents and my uncle, Paul. Paul is only a couple years older than me, which made him

more like a brother than an uncle. We spent every day together and I consider him my role

model. Decision making was never a strong suit in my family. Sometimes, my family would

come up with an idea out of the blue with no thought or plan, which I very much disliked. Most

of the time everyone disagreed with everyone. Except for Paul, he used logic and reasoning

when talking to others, which is something I liked and it made me a firm decision maker and

planner. Once I settle on a decision, I stick to it and it is nearly impossible to suede me. Now,

many might think of this as stubbornness, but I think it is a great way to move ahead in life.

Based on Making Ethical Decisions, Ethical values are used as the basis for ethical

thinking that can help detect situations where we focus so hard on upholding one value that we

sacrifice another. The most important values when making a decision are trust, respect, and care.
The reason I like to plan ahead is so I can account for all of these values. If I were to make a

decision out of the blue like my parents, then I might not take into account other’s feeling of the

decision. I like to call ahead and make sure if I am planning a vacation, that I include everyone,

which shows care and respect. I also make sure that the people are actually going to attend the

event, which shows trust. I try to keep my values constant, however sometimes inconsistencies

can be seen when I talk to people about my hobbies and get carried away, which is a bad habit. I

have to understand that people may not be interested in the same things as me and defer the

conversation to a different direction in order for me to show my respect and care for them.

The biggest impact in shaping my values was my uncle Paul, he taught me how to think

for myself, and think for others. He was always generous, and bought me things I needed even

though he did not have much money. From him, I learned to care and respect others, trust others

and have them trust me. Having these values influenced my worldview, which according to

Marriam Webster’s is an understanding of the world especially from one’s standpoint. My

worldview is that people care, respect and trust each other. This may not be true for many

things, but I would like to think of the world as that. By having this type of worldview, it

influences me to make moral decisions, if I want the world to be a better place, my decisions

are one step closer to that goal. Moral decision shape our worldview and the world itself. The

more moral decisions we make the better the world will be, the more immoral decision we

make the worse the world will be.
